FRANCIS HENRY HEESE, 76, of Earling, died Sat., July 2nd, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan. A Mass of Christian Burial service for FRANCIS HEESE will be held 2-p.m. Tue., July 5th, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Visitation at the funeral home is from 6-9pm Sun., July 3rd, with the family present from 6-8pm. A Knights of Columbus Rosary will begin at 8pm, Sun.  Visitation will also be held from 3-8pm Mon., July 4th at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, with a Rosary at 7-p.m. There will also be an open casket viewing at the church from Noon until 2-p.m. on Tue., July 5th.

Burial will be in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

FRANCIS HEESE is survived by:

His wife: Mary Alice (Kramer) Heese, of Earling.

His sons: Frank (Shari) Heese, of Harlan; Joe (Denise) Heese, of Earling; & Scott (Jennifer) Heese, of Bennington, NE.

His daughters: Pam (Brian) Gubbels, of Harlan; Vicki (Loren) Jorgenson, of Omaha, NE; & Shelli (Larry) Schaben, of Earling.

His Sisters: Marie Blum, of Earling, & Leona Sondag, of Portsmouth.

His two brothers-in-law,

19 grandchildren.

Alcohol related arrests in Stanton

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of three individuals early Saturday (7/2) morning in Stanton.  At approximately 1:29am a gray Kia Sportage was stopped at the parking lot of the Stanton School for having no headlamps on.  After further investigation arrests were made on alcohol related charges. 

The driver of the vehicle, 22-year-old Justin D. Williams of Stanton, was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated First Offense.  The two passengers, 20-year-old Kristopher A. Maley of Stanton and 19-year-old Jordan D. Williams also of Stanton, were arrested for Possession of Alcohol Under 21.  Maley and Jordan Williams were processed and released on citation, while Justin Williams was held on $1,000 bond.  All of the arrests occurred without incident or injury.

ROSS MARDESON, 73, of Elk Horn, died Friday, July 1st at his home in Elk Horn.  Funeral services for Ross Mardeson will be held at 10:30-a.m. Thu., July 7th, at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church.  Ohde Funeral Home in Kimballton has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 4-p.m. Wed., July 6th.

Burial is in the Elk Horn Lutheran Church Cemetery.

His son: Chad Mardeson, of Omaha, NE.

His step-sisters: OPal Nelson, of Pasadena, TX, & Donna Bjorn, of Atlantic.

Chase ends in Council Bluffs

The Council Bluffs Police department assisted the Omaha Police Department in a vehicle pursuit on Friday evening.  Officers from the Omaha Police department were actively pursuing two armed suspects in what was believed to be a stolen vehicle, when officers from the Council Bluffs Police Department joined the chase at 8:50pm.  During the pursuit the vehicle struck a parked vehicle in the area of South 35th Street and 8th Avenue, but continued to flee. 

Eventually the suspects crashed in the 10th block of South 31st Street and both suspects were taken into custody as the vehicle caught fire as a result of the crash.  Members of the Council Bluffs Fire Department were able to extinguish the blaze and the vehicle was confirmed stolen from Omaha.  The driver of the vehicle was identified as 21-year-old Eric Lozano who was arrested for previous valid warrants and also charged with Theft in the 2nd Degree and Felony Eluding.  The passenger in the vehicle was 18-year-old Aleazar Rodriguez who was charged as a material witness in a felony assault of police officers in Omaha, Theft in the 2nd Degree and Eluding.  Both suspects were held pending a court appearance.

LAWRENCE VORRATH, 98, of Greenfield, died May 30th, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Society in Fontanelle. Memorial Services for LAWRENCE VORRATH will be held 1-p.m.  Sat., July 9th, at the Greenfield United Methodist Church. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield is in charge of the arrangements.

Jahnke Named Atlantic Volleyball Coach

The Atlantic Community School District has announced the hiring of Chris Jahnke for the position of Head Volleyball Coach. Coach Jahnke is currently employed at CASS Incorporated in Atlantic and resides in Lewis with his wife Keri. Chris and his wife have five sons and one grandson. Coach Jahnke has most recently served as the Head Coach for the CAM and Griswold school districts. AHS Activities Director Josh Rasmussen says Coach Jahnke will bring leadership, experience, and knowledge to our volleyball program and is excited about working with our girls in preparation for this upcoming volleyball season.
