Midwest Sports Headlines: 4/9/19

Sports

April 9th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Marcell Ozuna homered to back a solid start by Miles Mikolas, and the St. Louis Cardinals rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Dodgers, ending Los Angeles’ five-game winning streak. Mikolas allowed three runs on five hits in six innings, working around three hit batters in the first five innings. He had never hit more than one batter in a game and now has 17 in his career. For the Dodgers, the loss could be painful because of another groin injury to starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Edwin Encarnacion homered twice during an eight-run sixth inning, two of five homers for the hot-hitting Seattle Mariners during a 13-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals. The Mariners have scored five or more runs in 11 of their first 12 games and have 32 homers in that span, the most ever by a team a dozen games into the season. The St. Louis Cardinals had 31 in 2000, according to STATS. Encarnacion is the first Mariner to homer twice in an inning since Bret Boone and Mike Cameron in 2002.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu left his start against the St. Louis Cardinals with a strained left groin, an injury that sidelined him for 90 games last season. The 32-year-old left-hander hurt his groin on May 2 last year at Arizona and said at the time he previously hurt the groin in May 2016. Ryu did not return to the Dodgers last year until Aug. 15.

UNDATED (AP) — April is just over a week old, and already Whit Merrifield is more than halfway to matching Joe DiMaggio’s famous hitting streak. That’s because Merrifield’s run began toward the end of last season. The Kansas City infielder has now gone 29 straight games with a hit. DiMaggio’s 56-game mark isn’t exactly in jeopardy at the moment, but Merrifield needs only one more game to tie George Brett’s franchise record.

UNDATED (AP) — Kansas forward Dedric Lawson will skip his senior year and enter the NBA draft, the latest move in what should be a significant overhaul of the Jayhawks’ roster for next season. Lawson transferred from Memphis and sat out last season, then led the Big 12 with 19.4 points and 10.3 rebounds this past season.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Bill Moos is on a roll as Nebraska’s athletic director. The 68-year-old has pulled off two of the splashiest hires in college athletics in the 18 months since he arrived. He brought in Scott Frost to coach football and Fred Hoiberg to lead the basketball program. Moos has done all this while batting away criticism for leaving a hefty debt at Washington State and fending off social media rumors that forced the administration to issue a statement of support.
