DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – U.S. Senate candidate Joni Ernst has condemned Facebook posts her husband made that included calling Hillary Clinton a “hag.” The Des Moines Register reports that the Republican state senator from Red Oak says she was appalled by her husband’s remarks and says she’s talked to him about them. Her husband, Gail Ernst, said Tuesday that he wanted to “apologize for the inappropriate comments I have made on Facebook, which I deeply regret.”
In April last year he posted a photo of Janet Napolitano, then the U.S. homeland security secretary, calling her a “traitorous skank.” Then in May last year Gail Ernst said on Facebook that Clinton was a “lying hag” after she commented about the attack on a U.S. diplomatic installation in Benghazi, Libya.
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – A Council Bluffs pediatrician accused of sexually abusing a 5-year-old girl outside of his practice has surrendered his state medical license. The Des Moines Register says the Iowa Board of Medicine reported Tuesday that 69-year old Dennis Seaborn Jones had given up the license. Jones is charged in Pottawattamie County District Court with sexual abuse, accused of inappropriately touching the girl. He has pleaded not guilty.
Last month Jones pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography. As part of a deal with federal prosecutors, Jones agreed to permanently surrender his medical license. Authorities say they found about 1.2 million images and 9,300 videos of child pornography during a search of Jones’ home.
Fitness monitors are growing in popularity as people who want to get in better shape seek ways to track their physical activity. Now, researchers at Iowa State University have released a study about the accuracy of those devices. Greg Welk is a professor of kinesiology at ISU. “Most of the monitors are released with little or no evidence of validity. Internally, they may do some checking and make sure that their calorie estimates are okay, but none of that is ever been reported or published,” Welk said.
The ISU study tested eight different activity monitors and found the BodyMedia FIT device was the top performer with a 9.3 percent error rating. “The BodyMedia FIT was the one that performed the best, but the other monitors performed fairly well,” Welk said. The accuracy of the eight monitors, generally worn on the wrist, were tested against a portable metabolic system.
“That’s the true gold standard measure,” Welk said. “We basically computed the energy expenditure estimates from all of the devices using their software and compared to the metabolic (system).” The ISU research is published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. This summer, Welk plans to test more activity monitors that recently arrived on the market.
“A lot of these monitors are now very attractive to people because they integrate with their cell phone and allow connection to social media,” Welk said. Most of the devices range in price between $100-$200.

A Red Oak man was arrested Tuesday night on a charge of Going Armed with Intent. Red Oak Police say 22-year old Dustin James Danick was taken into custody at around 9:20-p.m. at 1800 E. Summit St., Apt. 6, in Red Oak. Danick was brought to the Montgomerry County Law Enforcement Center and held on $5,000 bond.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – More water than normal flowed into the Missouri River system last month because of the amount of snow melting, but officials say the reservoirs can handle it. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Tuesday the increased runoff was expected. May’s runoff was about 130 percent of normal.
The corps is predicting the Missouri River system that stretches from Montana down through the Dakotas and into Missouri will see 31.1 million acre feet of water this year. That’s down slightly from last month’s prediction, but ahead of the average of 25.2 million acre feet.
Jody Farhat with the corps says the reservoirs along the river are in a good position to handle the increased runoff, and less than 25 percent of this year’s snowpack remains.
WOODBINE, Iowa (AP) – A western Iowa police chief has resigned after three months on the job. The Daily Nonpareil in Council Bluffs reports that Woodbine Police Chief Scott Brammer stepped down effective Friday. Brammer declined to comment, except to say that he has taken a job as a security director for the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Sioux City.
Brammer was hired as the city’s police chief in March, after serving as an officer. He took over for Gary Dull, who had held the job since 2012. The Woodbine City Council approved the hiring of Michael Jensen as interim police chief. Jensen will go through a six-month probation period before the council decides whether to hire him permanently.
Jensen has been an officer for the city for about four years.
