Northern Iowa Tops Saint Joseph’s 67-65 in NIT

Sports

March 14th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Seth Tuttle sank two free throws with 1.3 seconds left and finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead Northern Iowa to a 67-65 win over Saint Joseph’s on Wednesday night in the opening round of the NIT. Marc Sonnen scored 15 points for the Panthers (20-13), who play at Drexel in the second round. The Dragons advanced with an 81-56 win over Central Florida. Ronald Roberts Jr. tied the game for the Hawks (20-14) on a thunderous dunk with 7 seconds left to bring them back after they trailed most of the second half. But Roberts fouled Tuttle with the game tied at 65. Hawks coach Phil Martelli pounded the scorer’s table in frustration. Tuttle made the first and appeared to try and miss the second on purpose, but the ball rattled around and in for a 67-65 lead. The Hawks turned the ball over on their last possession. Carl Jones scored 24 points and C.J. Aiken had 16 for the Hawks. Halil Kanacevic grabbed 12 rebounds.

Carpenter Plays Catch, Says He Feels Stronger

Sports

March 14th, 2012 by Jim Field

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — St. Louis pitcher Chris Carpenter played catch with teammate Jake Westbrook on Wednesday morning, a step the Cardinals’ ace hopes gets him closer to prepared for the season.

Carpenter has been dealing with a bulging neck disc and has yet to appear in a game this spring for the World Series champions.

Carpenter says he does not know what the next step in his recovery will be. He says he’s aiming to “continue to go in the right direction” and that he’s been able to stay in shape through running and weightlifting. His workouts have been tempered because of the neck issue, but his full range of motion has returned in recent days.

Carpenter went 4-0 in last year’s playoffs, winning Game 7 of the World Series against Texas.

Sports

March 13th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Freshman Aaron White scored a career-high 25 points, sophomore Zach McCabe tied a career high with 20 and seventh-seeded Iowa rolled past Dayton 84-75 on Tuesday night in the opening round of the NIT. Sophomore Melsahn Basabe added 15 points for the Hawkeyes (18-16), playing in their first postseason tournament game in six years, broke open a tie game with a 16-3 run midway through the second half to go ahead 65-52. Kevin Dillard had 23 points for Dayton (20-13), which beat Minnesota, Alabama and Mississippi this season. Though the Flyers were the higher seed, the game was played in Iowa City because Dayton’s home gym was hosting the NCAA tournament.  Iowa will play at Oregon in the second round on Sunday.  The Duck beat LSU 96-76 in their first round game Tuesday night.  Sunday’s game can be heard live on KJAN with the pre-game at 3:00 pm and tip-off at 4:00 pm.

Iowa State’s Risky Hire of Fred Hoiberg Pays Off

Sports

March 13th, 2012 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa (AP) — The debate over Iowa State’s decision to hire Fred Hoiberg two years ago included at least one point everyone could agree on.

Even if Hoiberg could make the transition from NBA executive to Big 12 coach, it was going to take time.

Well, “The Mayor” has arrived and he’s way ahead of schedule.

The Ames native and former Iowa State star has improbably pushed his local legend to new heights. Just 23 months after taking his first coaching job at any level, Hoiberg was named the Big 12’s co-Coach of the Year and his Cyclones (22-10) are in the NCAA tournament for the first time in seven years.

Eighth-seeded Iowa State will face defending national champion Connecticut (20-13) on Thursday.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State has earned its sixth consecutive NCAA tournament bid and will host Horizon League champion Wisconsin-Green Bay on Saturday. If the Cyclones beat Green Bay (30-1) they’ll face either second-seeded Kentucky or McNeese State.
