ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have recalled right-handed reliever Eduardo Sanchez from Triple-A Memphis and released struggling lefty J.C. Romero. The 23-year-old Sanchez was 0-2 with a 6.08 ERA in 14 appearances in the minors but did not allow a run in his last five outings. He didn’t give up any runs in seven spring training games, with 14 strikeouts in eight innings. The 34-year-old Romero allowed nine runs in 3 1-3 innings in his last three appearances and was 0-0 with a 10.13 ERA in eight innings over 11 games overall. The Cardinals were the sixth team in 12 seasons for Romero. Monday’s move leaves the Cardinals with one lefty, Marc Rzepczynski.

Coach Shawn Petersen says:  Kind of a disappointing end to a good season for the guys — Glenwood is the deepest team in the conference, and were without their #2 player — but they were too tough for us.  I thought we needed a split in singles to have a chance, but we let a 3-0 lead in 3rd set at #3 get away, and we had 3 match points in the #6 match slip away, which was the clinching 5th team point for Glenwood.  Give Glenwood credit, though — they hung in tough and fought hard.  This was the end of the road for the team — overall a very good season, and we have a lot to work with for next year.

I thought everyone in the lineup played well — Tyler’s match could’ve gone either way, and Noah did well to fight back after losing the first set.  Mitch was the dominant player of the day — he’s really on top of his game right now.  I look forward to seeing how Mitch and Tyler do at the state tournament next weekend.

Girls:

• Harlan 2, Atlantic 1 (2OT) Ali Hosfelt scores in the 1st period off a penalty shot.  Harlan would score late in the 2nd half off a corner kick and again  late in the 2nd overtime to go up 2 to 1.  Maren McNees ends the night with 40 saves.  Cassie Long & Diana Perkins led the team defensively combining for 12 interceptions.  The Trojanns travel to Carroll on Thursday.

Hundreds of bicyclists in at least a half-dozen Iowa cities will gather and ride their two-wheelers in a slow line tonight (Wednesday) as part of the Ride of Silence. Scott Sumpter, organizer of the Des Moines ride and founder of BikeIowa.com, says it’s a solemn tribute. “The ride exists so we can ride in honor and pay respect to those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways,” Sumpter says. Since May of last year, five bicyclists have died on Iowa’s roads and 16 were injured. Those 21 names will be added to a list of more than 160 people who’ve been killed or injured while biking in Iowa in recent years. He says it’s an unfortunate fact that cyclists aren’t always respected by careless motorists.

“Every year, we see bicycling grow but we also see a few people get hit and killed,” Sumpter says. “We’re out there to raise awareness that the cyclists have the legal right to ride the roads.” Rides of Silence are being held in more than 300 American cities tonight and in 18 other countries. Sumpter says the bike riders will only be rolling along at maybe 10 or 12 miles an hour, and in many cities, with a police escort. “Every ride is supposed to start at 7 PM,” Sumpter says. “It’s just a silent procession, a really slow ride. It’s almost like a funeral-like procession.” Rides are being held in cities including: Ames, Cedar Falls, Des Moines, Mason City, Woodward and in the Omaha suburb of Bellevue, Nebraska. ST. LOUIS (AP) — Yadier Molina hit an RBI single off Cubs closer Rafael Dolis with two outs in the ninth inning and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 7-6 Tuesday, avoiding a sweep and an 0-5 homestand. Alfonso Soriano, who hit 26 home runs last year, tied it for the Cubs with his first of the season leading off the ninth against Jason Motte (2-1). Matt Carpenter’s second homer in four games off James Russell had put the Cardinals up in the eighth. The Cubs scored three runs in the first, and there were later four ties before the Cardinals won.
