Iowa Rolls Past Dayton 84-75 in NIT Opener

Sports

March 13th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Freshman Aaron White scored a career-high 25 points, sophomore Zach McCabe tied a career high with 20 and seventh-seeded Iowa rolled past Dayton 84-75 on Tuesday night in the opening round of the NIT. Sophomore Melsahn Basabe added 15 points for the Hawkeyes (18-16), playing in their first postseason tournament game in six years, broke open a tie game with a 16-3 run midway through the second half to go ahead 65-52. Kevin Dillard had 23 points for Dayton (20-13), which beat Minnesota, Alabama and Mississippi this season. Though the Flyers were the higher seed, the game was played in Iowa City because Dayton’s home gym was hosting the NCAA tournament.  Iowa will play at Oregon in the second round on Sunday.  The Duck beat LSU 96-76 in their first round game Tuesday night.  Sunday’s game can be heard live on KJAN with the pre-game at 3:00 pm and tip-off at 4:00 pm.

Iowa State’s Risky Hire of Fred Hoiberg Pays Off

Sports

March 13th, 2012 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa (AP) — The debate over Iowa State’s decision to hire Fred Hoiberg two years ago included at least one point everyone could agree on.

Even if Hoiberg could make the transition from NBA executive to Big 12 coach, it was going to take time.

Well, “The Mayor” has arrived and he’s way ahead of schedule.

The Ames native and former Iowa State star has improbably pushed his local legend to new heights. Just 23 months after taking his first coaching job at any level, Hoiberg was named the Big 12’s co-Coach of the Year and his Cyclones (22-10) are in the NCAA tournament for the first time in seven years.

Eighth-seeded Iowa State will face defending national champion Connecticut (20-13) on Thursday.

March 13th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) – Carlos Beltran went 2-for-4 in his return following a bout with the flu, and Kolten Wong singled in the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning as a St. Louis Cardinals split squad beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4 on Monday. Cardinals starter Jaime Garcia allowed one run, three hits and two walks. Only 21 of his 40 pitches were strikes.

In the early afternoon game, Ryan Zimmerman homered for the second time this spring and added a double in the Washington Nationals’ 8-4 victory against a St. Louis Cardinals split squad, Monday. David Freese hit a three-run home run for St. Louis. Top Cardinals prospect Shelby Miller gave up three runs and four hits in 2 1-3 innings.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have re-signed defensive lineman Amon Gordon, a 30-year-old veteran who played in all 16 games last season. Terms of the deal announced Monday were not released. Gordon, 6-foot-2 and 305 pounds, joined Kansas City in 2011 after previous stints with Tennessee, Seattle, Baltimore, Denver and Cleveland. His 57 career tackles include 20 last season – 12 of them solo – for the Chiefs. He also had two sacks and a quarterback pressure for Kansas City.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State has earned its sixth consecutive NCAA tournament bid and will host Horizon League champion Wisconsin-Green Bay on Saturday. The Iowa Hawkeyes also earned an at-large bid to the tournament. The eighth-seeded Hawkeyes will play No. 9 California on Sunday in South Bend, Ind. The winner between the Hawkeyes (19-11) and the Bears (24-9) will likely face the top-seeded Fighting Irish on Tuesday. The Cyclones (18-12) are the 10th seed in the Kingston, R.I., region. If the Cyclones beat Green Bay (30-1) they’ll face either second-seeded Kentucky or McNeese State.

Cardinals Look to Lynn as Carpenter Heals

Sports

March 12th, 2012 by Jim Field

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Lance Lynn may be the St. Louis Cardinals’ “Plan B” if former Cy Young award winner Chris Carpenter isn’t ready for the season.

Expected to be a member of the bullpen at the start of camp, the Cardinals will look at Lynn as a possible starter in case Carpenter is unable to recover from a bulging disc in his neck.

A 24-year-old year old right-hander, Lynn will make his first start of the spring on Wednesday against Houston. The Cardinals are also considering rookie Shelby Miller, a former No. 1 pick.

Creighton Coach Unhappy With No. 8 Seed

Sports

March 12th, 2012 by Jim Field

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Creighton coach Greg McDermott says his Bluejays deserved a fifth or sixth seed in the NCAA tournament.

Instead, the selection committee made Creighton a No. 8 seed in the Midwest Regional. If the Bluejays beat No. 9 Alabama on Friday in Greensboro, N.C., and top-seeded North Carolina wins its game against either Lamar or Vermont, a Doug McDermott-Harrison Barnes matchup will be set for Sunday.

Doug McDermott, the Creighton star, and the Tar Heels’ Barnes were teammates on the powerful Ames (Iowa) High team that won 53 straight games and made national headlines when Barnes was the nation’s top recruit in 2010.

The 19th-ranked Bluejays (28-5) won the Missouri Valley Conference tournament for the league’s automatic NCAA bid.
