Sports

March 28th, 2012 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior forward Chelsea Poppens has been recognized as an honorable mention All-American by The Associated Press.

Poppens, an Aplington, Iowa native, was the only Big 12 player to average a double-double this season. She averaged a career-best 14.2 points and 10.6 rebounds en route to being named one of three unanimous selections to the All-Big 12 first team. Poppens’ 317 rebounds make her just the second Cyclone to grab over 300 in a season. Former Cyclone All-American Angie Welle accomplished the feat in 2001 and 2002.

Poppens led the Big 12 in offensive rebounds, grabbing 4.4 per game, and shot 49.8 percent from the field. She improved from the free-throw line as a junior, shooting 71.3 percent from the charity stripe after entering the season as a 64.1 percent shooter.

Sports

March 27th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — It’s been over a year since Iowa State’s starting quarterback job came open. The Cyclones still can’t figure who their top guy will be. Iowa State spent the first week of spring practice embroiled in yet another quarterback competition. This time, the Cyclones are hoping either Steele Jantz or Jared Barnett grab hold of the team’s most important position. Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads didn’t offering any hints about the state of the competition on Tuesday, except to praise Jantz and Barnett for their work habits so far this offseason.

Wright Singles, Flashes Leather: Mets Beat Cards 6-3 Monday

Sports

March 27th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) – David Wright singled and made a fine fielding play in his first spring training game, helping the New York Mets beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 Monday. Wright had missed the entire Grapefruit League schedule because of a torn abdominal muscle. He lined Jake Westbrook’s full-count pitch into left field in the first inning. He grounded out to short in the fourth.  In the second inning, Wright dived to his right to snag Rafael Furcal’s one-hopper behind third base, popped up and threw to first in time.  Johan Santana walked three of the first four Cardinals – two scored. Coming in, Santana had walked just four in 13 1-3 innings.  Matt Holliday extended his hitting streak to 13 games with an RBI single. Tyler Greene’s sacrifice fly to right brought in the second run.

Creighton’s McDermott Makes AP All-American Squad

Sports

March 26th, 2012 by Jim Field

Kansas forward Thomas Robinson is a unanimous pick for The Associated Press’ All-America team, while Ohio State forward Jared Sullinger is a repeat selection.

Draymond Green of Michigan State, freshman Anthony Davis of Kentucky and Creighton’s Doug McDermott rounded out the team Monday.

McDermott is first Creighton player ever to be named an All-America.  He and three-time AP All-American selection Pete Maravich of LSU are the only All-American members coached by their fathers.

The 6-7 sophomore had the third best scoring average in Division I with a 23.2 average. He also averaged 8.2 rebounds while shooting 61 percent from the field, and 49.5 percent from 3-point range.

Robinson received first-team votes from all 65 members of the national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25. He is the first unanimous pick since Blake Griffin of Oklahoma in 2009.

Sullinger is the first repeat All-America since Tyler Hansbrough of North Carolina in 2009. He is the first to do it as a freshman and sophomore since Chris Jackson of LSU in 1989 and 1990.

With Davis’ selection there has been at least one freshman on the first team five of the last six years.
