FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — Colorado State introduced Larry Eustachy as its basketball Thursday. The 56-year-old Eustachy comes to the Rams from Southern Mississippi, where directed the Golden Eagles to a 25-9 record — 11-5 in Conference USA — and the school’s first NCAA tournament appearance since 1991. Southern Mississippi was 142-113 in eight seasons under Eustachy. During 19 seasons, he is 402-258 at Idaho, Utah State, Iowa State and Southern Mississippi. Eustachy, the 19th coach at Colorado State, replaces Tim Miles, who left the Rams on March 24 to take the job at Nebraska. Miles led the Rams this season to the NCAA Tournament. It’s been a long road for Eustachy, who rebuilt and restored his career at Southern Miss. He resigned at Iowa State in 2003 shortly after photos of him partying with students surfaced.

Tickets for next year’s event will range from $25 to $70 and be valid for both games. Iowa and Iowa State will maintain their annual series, with next year’s game to be played in Iowa City.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Former Olympic gold medalist and WWE star Kurt Angle says he is pulling out of next week’s U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa. The 43-year-old Angle was planning on competing for a spot on the U.S. freestyle team headed to the London Games this summer. But Angle says on his Twitter page that hamstring and knee injuries forced him to pull out of the trials. Angle has been involved with professional wrestling since winning gold in Atlanta in 1996. Cael Sanderson, the 32-year-old Penn State wrestling coach who won gold at the Athens Games eight years ago, said this week that he is also dropping plans to win a spot on the U.S. team.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — So far, the St. Louis Cardinals are doing just fine without Albert Pujols. And they don’t seem to miss Tony La Russa, either. The World Series champions are off to a nice start heading into Friday’s home opener against the Chicago Cubs. During their impressive 5-2 start on the road under new manager Mike Matheny, the Cardinals have gotten plenty of clutch hitting and pitching. The Cardinals lead the National League with a .301 average and their 12 home runs, 37 runs and .371 on-base percentage were the best in baseball through Wednesday’s games. David Freese and Rafael Furcal are hitting above .400, Kyle Lohse is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA and Jake Westbrook didn’t allow an earned run in his first outing. Adam Wainwright will pitch in the home opener, opposing the Cubs’ Jeff Samardzija.

A person familiar with the hiring says Larry Eustachy is set to become Colorado State’s basketball coach. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the deal is only agreed upon and not finalized.  The embattled coach takes over for Tim Miles, who left for Nebraska last month after leading the Rams to the NCAA tournament.

Eustachy was a coach at Iowa State over a decade ago before his dramatic downfall. He resigned in 2003 shortly after photos of him partying with students surfaced.

Iowa’s Davis Leans on Senior QB Vandenberg

Sports

April 11th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Everything is new for Iowa offensive coordinator Greg Davis, from his players to his fellow coaches and even Iowa City. It’s a good thing Davis has a veteran quarterback to lean on. The arduous task of installing a new offense this spring has been eased considerably by the presence of senior quarterback James Vandenberg. The pair already has developed a strong working relationship according to Davis, who says he’s been impressed by how quickly Vandenberg has grasped his offense. Davis also says he has never seen a tight end with the combination of size and ability to stretch the field like junior C.J. Fiedorowicz. Davis says the Hawkeyes will look to use Fiedorowicz to create mismatches next season.
