Kansas LB Farley Transferring to Northern Iowa

Sports

June 4th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Linebacker Jake Farley is transferring from Kansas to Northern Iowa, where the sophomore will play for his father. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Farley has been a scout squad player at Kansas, where his father Mark was an assistant coach from 1997-2000. Mark Farley is now the head coach at Northern Iowa. Kansas coach Charlie Weis met with Farley on Friday and said in a statement Monday that he wished him “success and happiness as he returns home to be with his family.” Farley said in the same statement that he’s been impressed with the job Weis has done since taking over for the fired Turner Gill after last season, but that the opportunity to play for his father and have his family watch him play was too good to pass up.

Craig, Cardinals Stop 5-Game Skid, Beat Mets

Sports

June 4th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

NEW YORK (AP) — Allen Craig hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the eighth inning and the St. Louis Cardinals found a bit of missing pop, beating the New York Mets 5-4 Monday and stopping their season-worst losing streak at five. The Cardinals have never been swept in a four-game series in New York. The World Series champions had been outscored 19-1 by the Mets and no-hit by Johan Santana before salvaging the finale at Citi Field. Pinch hitter Scott Hairston and Lucas Duda homered for the Mets, who missed a chance to move all alone into the NL East lead. Craig connected one out after Matt Holliday hit a leadoff single against Jon Rauch (3-5) for a 5-3 lead. The Mets got closer in the bottom half when Andres Torres hit a long sacrifice fly, but closer Jason Motte retired David Wright on an inning-ending liner to right field with a runner at third base. Motte finished for his ninth save in 12 chances. Marc Rzepczynski (1-3) wound up with the win despite allowing Hairston’s eighth career pinch-hit homer in the seventh, a two-run shot with two outs that made it 3-all.

Routt, Boss Settling into Life in Kansas City

Sports

June 4th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Stanford Routt is growing accustomed to life on the other side of Arrowhead Stadium. The former Oakland Raiders cornerback has fit in seamlessly with his longtime division rival as the replacement for Brandon Carr, who left in free agency. Routt has been working out with the first team during the opening weeks of offseason workouts. He said it’s helped that he spent seven seasons playing against the Chiefs twice a year. It’s also helped that another ex-Raider, tight end Kevin Boss, is a newcomer with Kansas City. Routt was among the most penalized defensive backs in the NFL last season, but he’s also started 30 games over the past two years and was routinely put on the opposition’s best wide receiver. That’s why Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel appears so comfortable with him.

Niese strikes out career-high 10, Mets beat Cards

Sports

June 4th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

NEW YORK (AP) — Jonathon Niese struck out a career-high 10 in six scoreless innings and the New York Mets shut down the slumping St. Louis Cardinals for the third straight game, getting a homer and three RBIs from rookie Kirk Nieuwenhuis in a 6-1 victory Sunday night. Andres Torres added a two-run triple and finished a homer shy of the cycle. Nieuwenhuis, batting leadoff, also had three hits. Niese (4-2) became the latest New York pitcher to dominate the Cardinals, following Johan Santana’s no-hitter in the series opener Friday night — the first in Mets history — and knuckleballer R.A. Dickey’s seven-hit shutout Saturday. The only thing that prevented the Cardinals from being blanked in three consecutive games for the first time since October 1976 was a two-out RBI single by Adron Chambers in the eighth off Elvin Ramirez, who was making his major league debut.
