Cyclone Volleyball Team Opens Season Ranked 10th

Sports

August 14th, 2012 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Cyclones, who advanced to their second NCAA Elite Eight in two years last season, open the 2012 season ranked 10th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Poll, released Monday.

The Cyclones have begun the year ranked in the top-10 once before, ranked ninth at the beginning of the 2010 season.

In 2011, Iowa State finished eighth on the year after falling to Florida State in the NCAA Regional Final match, the second-highest year-end ranking in program history. The squad broke a school record in RPI, rising as high as second and ending the year third in the nation.

This season looks to be another challenging season on the court for head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch and the young Cyclones, who count seven true freshmen among 16 team members. The Cyclones will being the year against 2011 NCAA tournament teams Cincinnati, Florida State (No. 12 preseason) and Tennessee (No. 15) before traveling to 2011 NCAA Championship finalist Illinois for two matches. The Illini enter the year ranked seventh.

Texas leads the Big 12 in the preseason poll, ranked second and Kansas State rounds out the conference rankings at No. 22. Oklahoma received votes in the poll.

On Saturday, Iowa State hosts its annual Cardinal and Gold scrimmage at Hilton Coliseum at 1 p.m. CST. The regular season begins Aug. 24 against the Bearcats at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic in Knoxville, Tenn.

IHSAA, Iowa Cubs Extend State Tournament Contract

Sports

August 13th, 2012 by Jim Field

The Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Cubs also have announced that the State Baseball Tournament will remain at Principal Park through 2015. The two groups signed the agreement to extend the current contract that expires in 2013.

The home of the Iowa Cubs with all the amenities of professional baseball has been a popular destination for teams and fans since the tournament moved to the Capitol City in 2005. Paid attendance through the past eight years has averaged 30,700. From 1997-2004 tournament attendance averaged 18,356 at split sites.

Executive Director of the IHSAA Rick Wulkow commented, “The IHSAA prides itself in providing the best possible venues for our students participating in a State Championship event. Without question Principal Park is the finest baseball facility in Iowa, and allows us to give the teams and fans in each of our four classes the thrill of playing in a professional facility.”

He added, “Our relationship with the Iowa Cubs organization is excellent and they have been a gracious host to our teams and fans. The new contract extension is reflective of all these factors.”

Sam Bernabe, President/General Manager of the Iowa Cubs echoed similar thoughts, “The Iowa Cubs, the City of Des Moines and the Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau are proud and privileged to host the Iowa High School State Baseball Championships! The past 8 years have been a tremendous partnership and we look forward to extending our relationship with the IHSAA.”

He continued, “I can’t think of a better stadium in a more convenient city than Principal Park and the City of Des Moines to continue the great traditions of the State High School Baseball Tournament.”

Iowa TE Could Be Big Time, Not Just Big

Sports

August 13th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – If you set out to build a prototype tight end, you might very well end up with Iowa’s C.J. Fiedorowicz. The 6-foot-7, 265-pound junior seems poised for a breakout season. He played in all 13 games as a true freshman in 2010 but did not catch a pass. He didn’t do much to distinguish himself early last season, but caught 12 passes for 105 yards and three touchdowns in the last four games. He became a receiver that quarterback James Vandenberg could depend on and he also improved his blocking. He finished the season with 16 catches for 167 yards.

Pierre helps Phillies top Cardinals in 11

Sports

August 13th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Juan Pierre beat out a run-scoring infield single in the 11th inning, lifting the Philadelphia Phillies to an 8-7 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Jimmy Rollins reached off Barret Browning (0-2) on a fielder’s choice. He advanced to second base on a grounder and then stole third. Pierre hit one deep into the hole that shortstop Rafael Furcal made a great stab at and fired to first. Pierre just beat the throw to score Rollins and help the Phillies win two of three against the Cardinals. Philadelphia’s Erik Kratz hit a three-run homer off Mitchell Boggs in the eighth that tied the game 7-all. Ryan Howard also homered for the Phillies. Matt Carpenter had three RBIs for the Cardinals. Jeremy Horst (2-0) tossed two scoreless innings for the win in a game that lasted 3 hours, 53 minutes.

In Saturday’s game, Matt Holliday hit a three-run homer and Jake Westbrook won his fifth straight start to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-1 victory over Philadelphia.
