CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) – Fewer Iowans are buying hunting and fishing licenses, but state officials say that doesn’t necessarily mean interest in the sports are waning.  Sales of hunting licenses to Iowa residents dropped 13 percent from 2007 to last year, and resident fishing licenses declined about 4 percent during that period. Nationally, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates hunting is up 9 percent and fishing has increased 11 percent.

Joe Larscheid, chief of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Bureau, says that the national numbers are based on interviews. He says fishing remains strong in Iowa and license declines could reflect recent flooding.  DNR spokesman Kevin Baskins says declining pheasant populations hurt hunting license sales. That decline is blamed on grassland losses and recent harsh winters.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are assured of their ninth straight losing preseason. At 1-2 going into Thursday night’s final tuneup at Green Bay, the Chiefs since 2004 are a woebegone 7-28 in preseason games. They haven’t posted a winning preseason since 2003, when Dick Vermeil’s Chiefs won the Hall of Fame game to finish 3-2. They then tore through the regular season 13-3. Anyone who insists that preseason games are meaningless should take note that Kansas City’s combined 6-26 record of the past eight years was followed by 53 wins and 75 losses in the regular season, one playoff appearance and no postseason wins. Coach Romeo Crennel may use the starters against Green Bay much more than first-teamers normally play in a game that usually belongs to backups and longshots.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pedro Alvarez homered twice and drove in four runs, James McDonald scattered two hits over seven innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates beats the St. Louis Cardinals 9-0 on Tuesday night. Alvarez hit a two-run homer in the third to give the Pirates a comfortable lead, added an RBI double in the fourth then hit a 469-foot blast to center in the sixth. He went 4 for 5 as Pittsburgh drew within two games of the Cardinals in the race for the NL’s second wild-card spot. McDonald (12-6) gave up two hits, walked one and struck out six to beat the Cardinals and Jake Westbrook (13-10) for the second time in the last two weeks. The Cardinals played most of the game without catcher Yadier Molina, who suffered neck, back and shoulder injuries following a violent collision at home plate with Pittsburgh second baseman Josh Harrison.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Brady Quinn has been picked as the backup quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, leaving Ricky Stanzi at No. 3 on the depth chart heading into their preseason finale. Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel told the team of his decision before Monday’s practice. The race to back up Matt Cassel had been one of the few open contests for Kansas City during training camp. Quinn signed as a free agent in the offseason, and Stanzi was No. 3 a year ago. Tight end Kevin Boss missed practice for what Crennel called personal reasons. Defensive backs Jalil Brown, Kendrick Lewis and Brandon Flowers were among numerous players who did not participate because of various injuries.  The Chiefs wrap up their preseason Thursday night at Green Bay.
