SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Marco Scutaro bounced back from Matt Holliday’s hard slide by delivering a big hit of his own that helped the San Francisco Giants get their first home win this postseason, 7-1 over St. Louis on Monday night that tied the NL championship series at 1-all. The game got off to a testy start when Holliday barreled into Scutaro at second base to break up a potential double play in the first inning. The play riled up a crowd that had seen three straight losses by the Giants so far in the playoffs.
There was plenty to cheer all night for the Giants. Ryan Vogelsong pitched seven strong innings, Angel Pagan hit a leadoff homer and Scutaro hit a two-run single off Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter that broke the game open in a four-run fourth. Scutaro left after five innings because of an injured left hip, and was going for X-rays.
STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy still isn’t sure who the Cowboys’ starting quarterback will be against Iowa State. Gundy said Monday that Wes Lunt, who suffered a knee injury on Sept. 15, is “day-to-day” but has started working with the Cowboys’ starters in practice. Backup J.W. Walsh, who’s started three games in Lunt’s absence, also is getting work in with Oklahoma State’s first team. Gundy says Iowa State (4-2, 1-2 Big 12 Conference) will have to prepare for both quarterbacks.
Whoever start Saturday, Oklahoma State (3-2, 1-1) is looking to improve upon an anemic performance in a 20-14 win over Kansas, in which the Cowboys managed just 371 yards of offense.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are staggering into their bye week. Their latest debacle was Sunday’s 38-10 rout at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that dropped their record to 1-5. It was their fourth blowout loss in six games, and it came one week after tackle Eric Winston chided fans for cheering after quarterback Matt Cassel suffered a head injury.
Fans and columnists are calling for the firing of coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli. Some are vowing to boycott the Chiefs until changes are made. The team will practice Monday through Wednesday before taking off the rest of the week.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State’s running game is scuffling, and the Cyclones have to try to fix it with their leading rusher on the sideline. The Cyclones are last in the Big 12 in rushing after managing only 65 yards on the ground in last Saturday’s 27-21 loss to Kansas State. James White, who leads the team with 264 yards rushing, missed that game and won’t play in next Saturday’s game at Oklahoma State.
Coach Paul Rhoads pounded the table twice during his weekly press conference to emphasize his point that the Cyclones have to run the ball to be successful. Iowa State (4-2, 1-2 Big 12) is 14-4 under Rhoads when rushing for at least 190 yards in a game and 8-18 when it falls below that figure.
