CANCUN, Mexico (AP) — Mike Gesell scored 19 points, including three 3-pointers, to help Iowa beat Western Kentucky 63-55 on Tuesday night in the Cancun Challenge semifinals.

Melsahn Basabe added 11 points, eight of them after halftime, for the Hawkeyes, who shot 47 percent from the floor and improved to 5-0 for the first time since the 2008-09 season. Iowa, which never trailed, also moved to 18-0 over the past three seasons when holding its opponent to 60 points or fewer.

T.J. Price scored 16 points and Jamal Crook had 14 for the Hilltoppers (2-2), and Brandon Harris pulled down 10 rebounds. Western Kentucky shot just 33 percent from the field, including 5 of 21 on 3-point attempts.

In Wednesday’s Riviera Division final, Iowa will face Wichita State, which beat DePaul earlier Tuesday. Western Kentucky will face DePaul in the consolation game.

Tuesday’s game was the first-ever meeting between Iowa and Western Kentucky.

Coaches: Big Ten’s big footprint a plus

Sports

November 20th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Big Ten football coaches say they will have little influence on scheduling and divisional alignments once Maryland and Rutgers join the conference. Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema said Tuesday that when Nebraska joined the conference he wasted a couple of days drawing up his ideal plan but had no input. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said conference leadership has handled past expansion well and believes adding Maryland and Rutgers will pay off.

Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said that with the money the conference believes expansion will generate he’d like to see players in some way get a share.

K.C. area prep picks Cyclones

Sports

November 20th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Kansas City-area prep point guard Clayton Custer says he plans to play for Iowa State. Custer is 6-foot-1 and hails from Overland Park, Kan. He was a first-team, Class 6A all-state pick as a sophomore for Blue Valley Northwest High last year and has two years of high school ball remaining.

Custer averaged 19 points and eight assists a game. He cited his relationships with coach Fred Hoiberg, assistant T.J. Otzelberger and the Cyclones players as critical in giving his verbal commitment to Iowa State. Custer is Iowa State’s first recruit in the class of 2014. He picked Iowa State over Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and others.

Omaha man, Iowa couple to be honored as ‘heroes’

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Omaha man who helped rescue a truck driver and an eastern Iowa couple who trains dogs for public service will be honored at Friday’s football game between Iowa and Nebraska. Iowa and Nebraska branded their now-annual rivalry as the “Heroes Game” after Nebraska joined the Big Ten Conference. The tradition, now in its second year, involves selecting “citizen heroes” from each state.

The Nebraskan who will be honored is Jason Parks, who witnessed a collision between two semitrailers while driving to work. He’s credited with pulling one of the drivers from flaming wreckage before the truck exploded. The Iowans are Lois and Bill Hall of Clinton, who raise and train K-9 dogs that assist in emergency search and rescue missions and provide therapy visits to schools and hospitals.

Chiefs waiting to hit bottom during 7-game skid

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel laid out for his team Monday exactly what it will take to end their seven-game losing streak. He then questioned whether the answer is even possible. He says his team has to fight, and has to be perfect. Then he said he knows no one is ever perfect. The Chiefs’ 28-6 loss to the Bengals on Sunday dropped them to 1-9, their lone victory requiring a franchise-record 18-point comeback at New Orleans.

ISU QB Sam Richardson sparkles in debut

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State spent nearly all season rotating two quarterbacks. The Cyclones finally gave option No. 3 a chance last weekend and third-stringer Sam Richardson responded with a brilliant night at Kansas. Richardson, a redshirt freshman, completed 23 of 27 passes for 250 yards and four touchdowns as Iowa State (6-5, 3-5 Big 12) beat Kansas 51-23.

Richardson got his chance after starter Steele Jantz suffered a head injury in the first quarter. Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads won’t announce whether Jantz or Richardson will start the regular-season finale Friday against West Virginia (5-5, 2-5), but he did acknowledge Monday that Richardson has the edge for job.
