Mayors bet on Nebraska-Iowa game

Sports

November 22nd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — The mayors of Omaha and Council Bluffs have agreed to a friendly wager on Friday’s football game between 17th-ranked Nebraska and Iowa. Council Bluffs mayor and Hawkeyes fan Tom Hanafan and his Omaha counterpart, Jim Suttle, say the loser of the bet will help build new homes for Habitat for Humanity.

The Council Bluffs Nonpareil reported that Hanafan and Suttle met Wednesday at the halfway point on the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge to make the bet. Amanda Brewer, the director of Omaha’s Habitat for Humanity, says the wager will help generate awareness for efforts by both cities to provide quality housing. Nebraska won last year’s game 20-7 in Lincoln.

Wichita State beats Iowa 75-63 to win Cancun title

November 22nd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

CANCUN, Mexico (AP) — Cleanthony Early scored 25 points, pulled nine rebounds and Wichita State claimed the Cancun Challenge tournament title in a 75-63 victory over Iowa on Wednesday night. Wichita State (6-0) dominated inside the paint, outscoring the Hawkeyes 30-6. Malcolm Armstead scored 14 points and Carl Hall added 12 to help keep the Shockers perfect so far this season.

Four players scored in double figures for Iowa (5-1) but shot a dismal 26.1 percent from the field. Aaron White had 14 points, Eric May had 13, Josh Oglesby had 12 and Roy Devyn Marble chipped in with 11. Iowa lived at the free-throw line against Wichita State, making 31 of 39.

Iowa led 35-34 at half time but the Shockers went on a 21-11 run in the first 9:19 of the second half capped off with a three-point play by Hall to make it 55-46 and Wichita State never trailed from that point on.

Iowa State coach impressed with WVU’s Tavon Austin

Sports

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Approaching the end of his stellar career at West Virginia, Tavon Austin continues to find ways to impress his teammates. Now he has a new fan in Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads. After returning from a win at Kansas, Rhoads started watching tape of West Virginia’s loss to Oklahoma and quickly realized what Austin was up to.

Inserted as a running back for the first time this season, Austin ran for a school-record 344 yards and set a Big 12 record with 572 all-purpose yards Saturday. Rhoads says with a shorter week before Iowa State (6-5, 3-5 Big 12) hosts the Mountaineers (5-5, 2-5) on Friday, he’s scrambling to find ways to slow down Austin. He at least wants to give his players a chance to tackle him.

Jack Taylor shatters NCAA scoring record with 138 points for Grinnell

Sports

November 21st, 2012 by Ric Hanson

GRINNELL, Iowa (AP) – Jack Taylor scored 138 points to shatter the NCAA scoring record in Division III Grinnell’s 179-104 victory over Faith Baptist Bible on Tuesday night.  Taylor made 27 of 71 3-point attempts, was 52 of 108 overall from the field and added seven free throws on 10 attempts in 36 minutes.

Rio Grande’s Bevo Francis held the NCAA scoring record with 113 points against Hillsdale in 1954. In 1953, Francis had 116 against Ashland Junior College.  The previous Grinnell record was 89 by Griffin Lentsch last Nov. 19 against Principia.

Hawkeyes set for rare meaningless finale

Sports

November 21st, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — When the Big Ten paired conference newcomer Nebraska with Iowa for the final game of the season, the prevailing thought was that the border state schools would quickly become heated rivals. It’s hard to maintain much intensity when one team has nothing tangible left to play for.

The free falling Hawkeyes (4-7, 2-5 Big Ten) will play in a meaningless game for the first time in 12 years on Friday when they host the 17th-ranked Cornhuskers (9-2, 6-1). Nebraska can clinch a spot in the Big Ten title game with a win. All Iowa can do is walk away with a victory that wouldn’t ease the sting of perhaps its toughest season under 14-year coach Kirk Ferentz.

Cubs designate LaHair for assignment

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs say they have designated first baseman Bryan LaHair for assignment because he and the club are pursuing an opportunity for him in Japan. An All-Star last season, LaHair batted .259 with 16 home runs and 40 RBIs in 130 games. He originally signed with the Cubs as a minor league free agent in December 2009.

The Cubs made several other moves on Tuesday, acquiring right-handed pitching prospect Barret Loux and a player to be named from the Texas Rangers for right-hander Jake Brigham. They also assigned right-hander Carlos Gutierrez outright toTriple-A Iowa after he cleared waivers and selected the contracts of four players — right-hander Trey McNutt from Double-A Tennessee, infielder Christian Villanueva from Class-A Daytona, infielder Logan Watkins from Tennessee and right-hander Robert Whitenack from Daytona.
