ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) – Jordan Clarke set a tournament record with 18 rebounds and was one of five double-figure scorers with 15 points for Drake in a 77-66 victory over Rice in the sixth annual DIRECTV Classic on Friday night.
Drake (2-2) also held a 35-25 rebounding advantage.
The Bulldogs were led by Ben Simons’ 18 points. Seth VanDest scored 12 points, Chris Hines scored 11 and Gary Ricks Jr. had 10.
Simons connected on four 3-point shots and Hines hit three from long range.
Rice (1-4) got 25 points from Tamir Jackson, including three 3-pointers, and 12 points from Julian DeBose.
AMES, Iowa (AP) – Tavon Austin turned a touch pass from Geno Smith into a 75-yard touchdown with 6:31 left and West Virginia held on to beat Iowa State 31-24 Friday to break a five-game losing streak.
In the first game between the two schools, the Mountaineers (6-5, 3-5 Big 12) trailed 24-23 when they took over on their own 25 after Iowa State’s Edwin Arceo kicked a 49-yard field goal.
Smith took the snap in shotgun formation and immediately flicked the ball to Austin cutting in front of him. Austin, who had been held in check until then, turned the corner and easily outran the pursuit down the left sideline.
Iowa State (6-6, 4-5) then drove to the West Virginia 7, but Jeff Woody fumbled into the end zone and Karl Joseph recovered for the Mountaineers, which ran out the clock.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Sean Kilpatrick scored 32 points, leading No. 22 Cincinnati to a 78-70 win over Iowa State on Friday night in the semifinals of the Global Sports Classic. After winning their first four games by an average margin of 34.5 points per game, the Bearcats (5-0) had their hands full with a talented Iowa State (4-1) team that stole the momentum in the first half, dictated the pace at times to keep things close and pulled within 4 points with 46 seconds left.
Cincinnati’s early second-half run of 15-5 gave it enough breathing room to keep its distance and secure the win. Cincinnati has won three of the four all-time meetings with Iowa State, the last three coming at neutral sites. This was the first meeting between the schools since then-No. 1 Cincinnati beat Iowa State 75-60 on Nov. 28, 1999, in Hilo, Hawaii.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Rex Burkhead scored the go-ahead touchdown in his return from a knee injury and No. 17 Nebraska beat Iowa 13-7 on Friday to secure a spot in the Big Ten title game. The Huskers (10-2, 7-1 Big Ten) will face off against Wisconsin next Saturday in Indianapolis. It’ll be a rematch of Nebraska’s thrilling 30-27 home win over the Badgers in late September. Burkhead, making his first appearance since spraining the MCL in his left knee on Oct. 20 against Northwestern, broke through with a 3-yard TD run to make it 13-7 late in the third quarter. Alonzo Whaley’s interception with 2:11 left sealed the victory for Nebraska. The Huskers defense held the Hawkeyes (4-8, 2-6) scoreless in the final three quarters in windy conditions.
WILDWOOD, Mo. (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese is OK after crashing his SUV while trying to avoid a deer. The accident happened Thursday afternoon in the St. Louis suburb of Wildwood. The 29-year-old most valuable player of the 2011 World Series crashed his black 2011 Range Rover into a tree but missed the deer.
Freese refused medical attention and his SUV was towed from the scene. Investigators say alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Justin Cobbs scored four of his 21 points in the final 71 seconds, Allen Crabbe had 15 points and California rallied from nine points down in the final 7 minutes to beat Drake 73-70 on Thursday night in an opening-round game of the DirecTV Classic. Richard Solomon had 10 points for the Bears (4-0) before fouling out in the final seconds. Each of Cal’s first three wins was decided by margins of 11 or more points.
Ben Simons had 13 points for Drake (1-2), sharing scoring honors with Seth VanDeest, Richard Carter and Gary Ricks Jr. Jordan Clark had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) — Russ Smith scored 16 points and No. 2 Louisville overcame a terrible offensive effort for a 51-46 victory over Northern Iowa on Thursday night in the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis. The Cardinals had a bad first half, looked as if they straightened things out but then stumbled to the finish. Louisville (4-0) will face No. 13 Missouri in Friday night’s semifinals. The Tigers beat Stanford 78-70.
The Cardinals somehow held a 26-20 halftime lead despite shooting 27.0 percent from the field (10 of 37) and committing 10 turnovers. They held Northern Iowa (3-1) to one field goal over the opening 10:47 of the second half and that cut Louisville’s lead 40-24. It was far from an easy ride to the finish as the Cardinals went 5:12 without scoring and suddenly the Panthers were chipping away.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Officials in Iowa City are hoping to capitalize on the combination of the Iowa-Nebraska football game and the traditional post-Thanksgiving shopping frenzy to show off downtown. The Iowa City Press-Citizen says city officials embarked on a marketing push around Friday’s activities that included social media and advertising in the Omaha market.
George Etre, a member of the Iowa City Downtown District marketing committee, says many downtown business owners are anticipating high foot traffic on Friday. But Etre says the overall effectiveness and impact on downtown businesses is hard to predict.
The Hawkeyes are hosting nearby Nebraska for the first time in 13 years. You can catch the game Friday on KJAN, starting with the pre-game show at 9-a.m. Kick-off is at 11.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State never wanted to reach the point where it had to beat West Virginia on the day after Thanksgiving to become bowl eligible. The Cyclones took care of that by winning their sixth game last weekend. But it’s not like the Mountaineers are nearly as scary as they looked to be in early October, either.
West Virginia (5-5, 2-5 in the Big 12) has fallen from the top 10 to the Big 12 basement in five long weeks. Now it’s the Mountaineers who need to beat Iowa State (6-5, 3-5) on Friday just to reach a bowl game — not the other way around.
