Iowa reassigns official amid sex harassment review

Sports

November 30th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa has reassigned an athletics department official in the wake of what the president called lapses in the case of an academic counselor accused of improperly touching athletes. Athletic Director Gary Barta said Friday that associate athletics director Fred Mims would no longer oversee student services and compliance. Barta said the unit will be reorganized into two. A spokesman says Mims will assist in the reorganization then hold a position related to student athlete welfare.

The action comes amid criticism of the handling of Peter Gray, who resigned earlier this month after an internal investigation found that he had made some students uncomfortable with frequent massages and hugs. President Sally Mason apologized for “an isolated breakdown” of the school’s commitment to protect students and ordered a review.

The 16 girls cross country team members were a near miss with a 3.22 GPA.  A 3.25 GPA is needed to qualify for all-state.  Bri Munsey led the team with a 4.0 GPA.

Previously, Tyler Fischer, Matt Iekel and Liz Guttenfelder received certificates denoting them as Hawkeye 10 Academic All-Conferences honorees.

Cardinals announce 32-game spring schedule

Sports

November 30th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals will open their schedule of spring training games with a matchup against the Miami Marlins on Feb. 23 in Jupiter, Fla.  The Cardinals announced their 32-game spring training schedule on Friday. It includes 16 home and 16 road games through March 29, prior to the regular-season opener April 1 at Arizona.

St. Louis will actually play 20 games at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter. Four of those are technically away games against Miami because the Cardinals and Marlins share the complex.  A spring highlight will be March 7 when the Cardinals host the New York Yankees. It will be the first time since 2006 that the Yankees have played the Cardinals in Jupiter. The teams meet at the Yankees’ complex in Tampa, Fla., on March 11.

Chiefs claim OL Hayworth Hicks (former ISU standout) off waivers

Sports

November 29th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs have claimed offensive lineman Hayworth Hicks off waivers.  The 6-foot-3, 336-pound Hicks entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Colts in April. He spent time on their practice squad before being acquired by the New York Jets on Nov. 6.  He spent three games on their roster but was inactive each week.

The former Iowa State standout takes the roster spot of linebacker Bryan Kehl, who was released earlier this week. He also provides additional depth if the Chiefs have to shuffle their line this Sunday against Carolina with Branden Albert and Ryan Lilja both ailing.

Kansas City also released kicker Matt Szymanski from the practice squad and signed Quan Sturdivant, a linebacker who has spent time with Arizona.
