KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Several players for the Kansas City Chiefs attended a memorial service for teammate Jovan Belcher, who killed his girlfriend and then fatally shot himself in the head. Belcher killed 22-year-old Kasandra Perkins on Saturday at the home they shared in Kansas City with their 3-month-old daughter. He then drove to the Chiefs practice facility at Arrowhead Stadium, where he killed himself in front of team officials, who pleaded with him to put down his gun.
Retired Chiefs Hall of Famer Bobby Bell said after the private hour-long service that general manager Scott Pioli, who witnessed Belcher’s suicide, spoke during the service. Bell said an uncle of Belcher also spoke. The service was held at a church that Belcher and Perkins attended. Several other Chiefs players declined comment after the service.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The estate or guardian of the infant of the Chiefs player who killed her mother before turning a gun on himself will receive more than $1 million under terms of the NFL’s collective-bargaining agreement. Jovan Belcher’s 3-month-old daughter, Zoey, stands to receive $108,000 annually over the next four years, $48,000 in the fifth year and then $52,000 each year until age 18. She’ll continue to receive that amount until age 23 if she attends college.
The beneficiary of Belcher, who was in his fourth season, also will receive $600,000 in life insurance, plus $200,000 for each credited season. There is also $100,000 in a retirement account that will go to his beneficiary or estate. Players’ beneficiaries are kept confidential. The current collective bargaining agreement was ratified in August 2011.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Jake Koch scored 17 points, Seth Tuttle added 14 and Northern Iowa never trailed Wednesday in a 76-59 victory over Northern Colorado. Koch added seven rebounds and was 6 of 8 from the field. Marc Sonnen chipped in 12 points for the Panthers (5-3), who improved to 5-0 at home. Nate Buss, who scored a career-high 17 points against Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Saturday, had just five in this one. Tevin Svihovec had 16 points and Paul Garnica scored 15 off the bench for the Bears (1-5), who lost their fifth straight.
A 16-0 first-half run put Northern Iowa ahead 27-6 halfway through the period. Buss made a 3-pointer before Nate Bohannon hit two from long range, and Koch capped the run with a three-point play. The Panthers led 40-29 at halftime and increased that advantage to as many as 25 in the second half. UNI shot 52 percent from the field.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Matthew Dellavedova scored 31 points, leading five players in double-figures, to give Saint Mary’s (Cal) to a 88-73 win over Drake on Wednesday night. Dellavedova was 10 of 14 from the field, including four 3-pointers, and 7 of 8 at the free throw line. He also had seven assists for the Gaels (6-2). James Walker III scored 14 points and had nine rebounds and five steals. Beau Levesque scored 14 points. Brad Waldow had 12 points and eight rebounds. Page added 10.
The Gaels shot 30 of 54 (55.6 percent) from the field for the game. They were 85 percent at the free throw line. St. Mary’s led 47-33 at halftime. The Bulldogs shot 21 of 51 (41 percent) from the field for the game. Jeremy Jeffers scored a career-high 16 points for Drake (3-4). Seth VanDeest added 15 and Ben Simons had 11. Jordan Clarke had five rebounds.
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State linebackers A.J. Klein and Jake Knott were named to the first teams of the All-Big 12 Associated Press squad and the league’s coaches team that were released Wednesday. Cyclone defensive tackle Jake McDonough earned a first-team spot in the defensive line on the coaches team. Iowa State strong safety Durrell Givens was a second-team choice on both polls. Iowa State punter Kirby Van Der Kamp was a second-team choice by the conference’s coaches.
Klein was a unanimous selection on the AP first-team. The senior leads Iowa State with 98 tackles this season. He enters the Dec. 31 Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tenn. with 342 career tackles and 19 tackles for loss. His four career interception returns for touchdowns equal the NCAA record for linebackers. Klein was a first-team selection by the Big 12 coaches and second-team choice by the conference’s coaches last season. The 2011 Big 12 co-Defensive Player of the Year by the league’s coaches earned honorable mention honors for that award this season. Klein was an honorable mention choice on the AP team in 2010.
Knott made both first teams despite missing the final four games of the season after career-ending shoulder surgery. Playing despite the injury, Knott made a huge impact in his final collegiate game against Baylor. The Waukee native had 11 tackles, broke up a pass and forced his 10th career fumble at the goal line in a 35-21 Iowa State victory. He finished his career with 347 tackles, 18 for loss, while breaking up 15 passes and making eight interceptions. Knott was a first-team honoree on the AP team last season. He was selected for second-team honors as a sophomore by AP and on the coaches.
Urbandale native Jake McDonough was a first-team selection by the Big 12 coaches after making 31 tackles, a pair of sacks and breaking up three passes. He heads into the Liberty Bowl with 84 career tackles, 13 tackles for loss and five sacks. He earned honorable mention honors on the AP team. McDonough earned honorable mention from the league’s coaches for defensive lineman of the year.
Durrell Givens, who leads the nation in take-aways per game, was honored on both second teams after leading the nation with six fumble recoveries. He also has three interceptions this season.
Iowa State punter Kirby Van Der Kamp was a second-team choice by the Big 12 coaches. The West Des Moines product has averaged 41.6 yards per punt this season. He has dropped 28 punts inside the opponent 20-yard line with only two touchbacks. The junior can kick the long ball when needed with 10 punts of 50 or more yards in 2012. He earned honorable mention honors for Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year from the conference’s coaches. Van Der Kamp was a second-team all-Big 12 selection as a freshman on the 2010 AP team while earning honorable mention honors from the league’s coaches that year.
Cyclones earning 2012 honorable mention honors from the league’s coaches were offensive lineman Carter Bykowski, defensive end Roosevelt Maggitt, cornerback Jeremy Reeves and free safety Jacques Washington.Bykowksi, center Tom Farniok and tight end Ernst Brun earned honorable mention on the AP team from the Big 12 media.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State says it is entering into a five-year partnership with Mediacom to distribute programming from Cyclones.tv across Iowa and bordering states. Cyclones athletic director Jamie Pollard says the agreement paves the way for a fully dedicated Iowa State sports channel on Mediacom’s cable television network. No date has been set for that channel’s launch.
Mediacom says it will televise roughly 75 Iowa State games a year, including a football game and 5-10 men’s basketball games. The programming will be produced by Cyclones.tv, Iowa State’s in-house broadcaster, and also include coaches’ shows and live media conferences. It’s believed that Iowa State would join Texas and BYU as the only schools with a channel dedicated to their athletic teams
Financial terms of the agreement have yet to be disclosed.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A person familiar with the arrangements says a memorial service for Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher is planned for Wednesday afternoon. The team moved up its practice schedule Wednesday so players could attend a 2 p.m. memorial service for Belcher at the Landmark International Deliverance and Worship Center in Kansas City. The source who spoke to The Associated Press requested anonymity because the person wasn’t authorized to discuss the event.
The source said the memorial service is not open to the public. Other details of the service aren’t known. Belcher shot Perkins at their home Saturday morning before driving to Arrowhead Stadium, where he committed suicide in the practice facility’s parking lot.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Aaron White tied his season high with 21 points as Iowa beat South Dakota 87-63 on Tuesday night. Devyn Marble added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Hawkeyes (7-2), who pulled away from the Coyotes with a 15-0 run at the end of the first half. Trevor Gruis scored 16 points to lead South Dakota (4-5).
Iowa controlled the interior with 54 points in the paint and a 50-31 rebounding margin. South Dakota nailed nine 3-pointers, including 5 of 8 to start the game. The Hawkeyes finished 2 of 16 from outside. Iowa native Casey Kasperbauer scored 14 points, making 4 of 8 from 3-point range for the Coyotes. Mike Gesell scored 12 points for Iowa. Adam Woodbury chipped in 10 points.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Point guard Korie Lucious scored a season-high 17 points, Tyrus McGee added 16 off the bench and Iowa State beat Florida Gulf Coast 83-72 on Tuesday night. Melvin Ejim chipped in with 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Cyclones (6-2), who’ve won two in a row ahead of Friday’s showdown in Iowa City with the rival Hawkeyes.
Iowa State pushed a slim halftime lead to 62-46 early in the second half and went on a late 15-4 run to put the Eagles out of reach. Chase Fieler had a game-high 18 points to lead Florida Gulf Coast (6-4), which had won two in a row.
