Iowa RB Mark Weisman like out with leg injury

Sports

October 30th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa running back Mark Weisman will likely miss Saturday’s game at Indiana with a leg injury. Weisman, the leading rusher for Iowa (4-4, 2-2 Big Ten) with 661 yards, hurt his leg during last week’s 28-17 loss at Northwestern. Weisman rushed for over 100 yards in four straight games this season, but he has been hobbled since spraining his ankle in a 19-16 win at Michigan State on Oct. 13. Last week, Weisman had just 21 yards on nine carries. Damon Bullock, who opened the season as the starting running back, had 107 yards rushing in the loss to the Wildcats. Bullock is listed as the starting running back against the Hoosiers (3-5, 1-3).

Cyclones eye return to NCAA tournament

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State isn’t necessarily rebuilding and it isn’t really reloading.  The Cyclones are seeking to reinvent themselves in 2012-13 by reverting back to a more traditional lineup.  Iowa State lost standout Royce White, who is now with the Houston Rockets. The Cyclones also lost their second and third-leading scorers in Scott Christopherson and Chris Allen, a pair of shooting guards who were also forced to handle the ball so they could play together.

Iowa State will replace their unconventional trio with a true point guard in Korie Lucious, a traditional wing forward in Will Clyburn and more depth than the program has had in years.  The Cyclones, who won 23 games and reached the third round of the NCAA tournament in 2011-12, open the season Nov. 9 against Southern.

Cassel to start at QB for Chiefs vs Chargers

Sports

October 30th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel will start Thursday night’s game at San Diego after Brady Quinn took a blow to the head in last weekend’s loss to Oakland. Coach Romeo Crennel said Tuesday that doctors have not cleared Quinn to practice, so Cassel will be the starter and Ricky Stanzi the backup. Cassel was the starter the first five games of the season before he sustained his own concussion against the Ravens.

Quinn started one game in Cassel’s place, and then Crennel made the switch permanent going into last Sunday’s game against the Raiders. Quinn was hurt late in the first quarter, and Cassel played the rest of the way in a 26-16 loss. The Chiefs (1-6) have lost four straight games.

Creighton picked to win Missouri Valley

Sports

October 30th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Creighton, which has four starters back from a team that made it to the third round of the NCAA tournament, was a near-unanimous choice to win the Missouri Valley championship. Preseason All-American Doug McDermott leads the way for the Bluejays, who received 398 of a possible 400 points in a poll of league coaches, sports information directors and media released Monday. McDermott was conference player of the year last season after shooting 63 percent overall and 48.6 percent from 3-point range. Illinois State was picked to finish second, followed by Northern Iowa, defending champion Wichita State and Evansville. Drake was sixth, followed by Indiana State, Missouri State, Bradley and Southern Illinois.

Joining McDermott on the preseason all-conference team were Colt Ryan of Evansville, Jackie Carmichael of Illinois State, Jake Odum of Indiana State and Ben Simons of Drake.

CHIEFS-CHARGERS BLACKOUT LIFTED

Sports

October 30th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Several corporate sponsors stepped up to help save the San Diego Chargers the embarrassment of having Thursday night’s NFL Network game against the Kansas City Chiefs blacked out locally. The Chargers said the sponsors, including the local CBS affiliate, guaranteed the purchase of enough tickets to lift the local television blackout. Those tickets will be donated to local military bases and military hospitals. The team wouldn’t say how many tickets had to be sold by the deadline of 5:20 p.m. Monday, but it was believed to be approximately 10,000. The NFL Network began showing Thursday night games in 2006 and has never had one blacked out locally. The Chargers have had one game blacked out this season, a loss to Atlanta on Sept. 23. San Diego (3-4) has lost three straight games, including two in which it blew double-digit leads in the second half. Kansas City is 1-6.
