DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State assistant coach Jeff Rutter is leaving the Cyclones to join Ray Giacoletti’s staff at Drake. Rutter spent seven seasons at Iowa State, the last three as the director of basketball operations under Fred Hoiberg. Rutter and Giacoletti have known each other for 20 years, and Giacoletti says Rutter’s roots will help further his goal to recruit players from the Midwest.

Rutter was the head coach at Wisconsin-Parkside from 1996-2003 before joining current Creighton coach Greg McDermott at Northern Iowa. Giacoletti was hired by Drake last week to replace Mark Phelps.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State is defending its handling of an investigation that found employees made 79 telephone calls to recruits that violated NCAA rules. In a statement Thursday, the school rejected claims that officials kept details of the violations from the public and oversight groups for too long.

Iowa State says it made the violations public Tuesday because that’s when a lengthy investigation was completed and sent to the NCAA. The school says it did so in the interest of transparency “despite the NCAA’s desire that institutions make no public comment” about pending cases.

School President Steven Leath says he personally notified the Board of Regents in January 2012 about the case, as soon as he became aware of it, and has kept them updated since then.

PHOENIX (AP) — Cliff Pennington’s single in the 16th inning brought home Jason Kubel from second to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 10-9 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in a game that didn’t end until early Thursday. At 5 hours and 32 minutes, it was the longest home game in Diamondbacks history as far as time elapsed and tied for the longest at home in terms of innings.

Yadier Molina drove in three runs, including a leadoff home run that put St. Louis up 8-7 in the seventh, but Aaron Hill’s RBI single tied it at 8 before both teams scored a run in the 12th. The Diamondbacks came from behind four times to either take the lead or tie the game. Paul Goldschmidt and Martin Prado each hit a two-run homer, and Gerardo Parra homered, tripled and singled for the Diamondbacks.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — It wouldn’t be fair to pin Iowa’s underperforming passing game on its wide receivers. It was everyone’s fault. The Hawkeyes ranked 102nd in the nation with 187.4 yards passing and third-worst with just seven TD passes. Wide receivers coach Erik Campbell has been replaced with Bobby Kennedy, who worked at Texas with offensive coordinator Greg Davis.

Kennedy says he’s been impressed by Iowa’s enthusiasm and desire to improve. Kennedy says he can tell the Hawkeyes were embarrassed by a 4-8 record and want to turn the program around.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Drake Relays director Brian Brown says Des Moines native Lolo Jones has committed to run in her hometown meet later this month. Jones won the 100-meter hurdles every year from 2005-08 at Drake. She then lost three straight before pulling out in 2012, an Olympic year, because of poor weather conditions. Jones will compete against rival Kellie Wells and Dawn Harper for a $50,000 purse, the largest ever offered in the U.S. Jones finished fourth in the 100 hurdles at the London Games, while Harper won the silver medal and Wells took bronze.

 The athletes range in age from 8 to 80 and represent Carroll, Crawford, Freemont, Harrison, Mills, Shelby and Pottawattamie counties. They will compete in track and field events, tennis, softball and the turbo javelin throw, developmental events and wheelchair races.

Ms. Iowa United States 2013 Kayla Helget will be the keynote speaker during the Opening Ceremonies that begin at 9:45 a.m. The Girl Scouts “Spirit of Nebraska” Honor Guard will present the colors and one of their members will sing the national anthem.

“Special Olympics brings out the champion in all of us, and this event is the perfect example of hundreds of people making this day a success for our athletes,” said Schafer. “Iowa Western Community College has played a vital role in keeping our games going year after year. They provide not only the venue for the competition, but also hundreds of volunteers.”

More than 230 volunteers representing various schools and student councils will volunteer on April 16 and include: Harlan Community and Shelby County Catholic Schools, IKM Manning Schools, Lewis Central Schools, Sidney Community Schools, St. Albert Catholic High School, and South Page Schools. Employees of the Union Pacific Railroad and members of the West End Optimist Club of Council Bluffs will also volunteer at the event.

First place winners at the Spring Games will compete at the Special Olympics Iowa State Summer Games May 23-25 at Iowa State University in Ames. The Summer Games are one of seven statewide competitions held in various locations during the year. Nearly 3,000 athletes from across Iowa compete at the Summer Games.
