Vols QB Tyler Bray getting shot with Chiefs

Sports

May 12th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Tyler Bray believes that every rookie has something to prove. He may have more than most. The former Tennessee quarterback left school a year early hoping he’d be chosen highly in the draft, but every team passed on him over the course of seven agonizing rounds. So he wound up signing with Kansas City as an undrafted free agent, and is now trying to make the team.

He’s been participating in the Chiefs’ rookie minicamp that finishes up Sunday.  Bray put up big numbers as a starter with the Vols, but questions about his maturity and some minor off-the-field incidents caused his stock to drop. Still, he had one of the biggest arms of the rookies coming out, and the Chiefs hope he can compete for a backup job.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning in a 3-0 Cardinals victory over the Colorado Rockies yesterday. The Rockies had been hitless in 49 consecutive at-bats before Nolan Arenado lined a hit to center field. The 49 at-bats is the longest hitless stretch since a 50 at-bat streak against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981.

Longtime head of girls athletic union dies at 90

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The longtime head of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union has died at age 90. The organization announced that E. Wayne Cooley died Saturday. Cooley became executive secretary of the athletic union in 1954. Over the next 48 years, he led an expansion of interscholastic activities from the single sport of basketball to include track and field, cross country, softball, golf, swimming, tennis, volleyball and soccer.

Much of the expansion came before federal Title IX rules were implemented, expanding opportunities for female athletes. Cooley was born Sept. 16, 1922, in Mercer, Mo. He married Gertrude “Gerry” Konkol in 1944 and they had two children. After his wife’s death, he married Wendy Wykoff in 1987. He graduated from Buena Vista University and was a naval officer during World War II.

Coach Shawn Petersen comments:

Tough day conditions-wise for the girls today — chilly and steady brisk wind out of the north — but I thought our girls for the most part handled it well; It was nice getting a win today — the first of the year for us; I was very happy for the team — the girls have worked awfully hard and have played all of the best teams around — even though I know they’ve shown improvement, it’s tough to keep grinding when the losses are piling up. We played Glenwood earlier in the year and got blown off the courts — even though the scores look lopsided against a very talented Rams team, our girls really played well and competed very hard — I was proud of their efforts today. Atlantic travels to Carroll for the H10 Conference Tournament Monday, before competing in Individual Regional competition on Thursday at Shenandoah.

Cardinals’ Miller retires 27 straight in 1-hitter

Sports

May 10th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Shelby Miller gave up a leadoff single then retired 27 in a row for his first career complete game, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies. Eric Young Jr. had a line drive hit to right field to start the game for the Rockies but Miller (5-2) gave up nothing else in his first shutout. The right-hander struck out Young to end it with his 13th K, tying a Cardinals rookie record.

The one-hitter was the fewest hits allowed by a Cardinals pitcher since Bud Smith tossed a no-hitter on Sept. 3, 2001, and it was the second one-hitter of the night in the major leagues. Boston’s Jon Lester was perfect until he allowed a two-out double in the sixth against Toronto.

Cubs RHP Fujikawa off DL, RHP Dolis to Triple A

Sports

May 10th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

WASHINGTON (AP) — Chicago Cubs right-handed reliever Kyuji Fujikawa has been activated from the 15-day disabled list. In another move before Friday’s game at the Washington Nationals, the Cubs optioned right-hander pitcher Rafael Dolis to Triple-A Iowa.

Fujikawa has been on the DL since April 13 because of a strained right forearm. The major league rookie is 1-0 with two saves and a 12.46 ERA in 4 1-3 innings in five appearances with the Cubs. Dolis has made two appearances with Chicago this season and hasn’t allowed an earned run in 1 2-3 innings.

Chiefs open three-day rookie minicamp

Sports

May 10th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Offensive tackle Eric Fisher and quarterback Tyler Bray had vastly different experiences during the NFL draft, yet both of them ended up with the Kansas City Chiefs. Both have a lot of people watching them, too. Fisher was the first overall pick out of Central Michigan, and will be expected to compete for a starting job on the offensive line, though it’s unclear whether it’ll be on the right or left side. That could depend on what happens with Branden Albert.

Bray left Tennessee early but wasn’t chosen in the draft, and signed with the Chiefs as a free agent. He’s expected to compete for a roster spot, and maybe even push to be the backup QB. The Chiefs opened a rookie minicamp Friday. It runs through the weekend.
