Cardinals to start prize rookie Wacha on Thursday

May 28th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals will promote top pitching prospect Michael Wacha to start in his major league debut Thursday against the Kansas City Royals. The Cardinals lead the major leagues with a 33-17 record despite numerous injuries on the pitching staff. They filled rotation holes with less celebrated rookies John Gast and Tyler Lyons earlier in the season amid speculation they didn’t want to start the service time clock on the 21-year-old right-hander.

The 6-foot-6, 210-pound Wacha was the Cardinals’ first-round draft pick and the 19th overall selection last year out of Texas A&M. He’s 4-0 with a 2.05 ERA that leads the Pacific Coast League in nine starts for Triple-A Memphis, holding opponents to a .187 batting average in his first pro season.

Wacha will be the eighth rookie pitcher to debut with the Cardinals this season. General manager John Mozeliak had cited Wacha’s lack of professional experience in the decision to promote others earlier.

Phoenix Suns confirm hiring of Hornacek as coach

PHOENIX (AP) – The Suns have officially hired former ISU Cyclones basketball standout Jeff Hornacek as their new coach. Phoenix turned to one of its former players Tuesday as the team looks to rebuild from one of the worst seasons in franchise history. Hornacek spent the first six of his 14 seasons as an NBA player with the Suns.

Multiple reports over the weekend had Hornacek getting the job, and the team made it official with Tuesday’s announcement that he would be the club’s 16th head coach. The 50-year-old Hornacek had been an assistant with the Utah Jazz since 2011. This is his first head coaching job.

He takes over a team that went 27-55 last season, the worst record in the Western Conference and second-worst in the franchise’s history. As a point guard for the Cyclones, Hornacek guided the team to the Sweet 16 in the 1986 NCAA Tournament. Hornacek left ISU with a Big-8 record of 665 career assists, still an Iowa State school record, and 1,313 career points.

Molina lifts Cardinals over slumping Royals

May 27th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Yadier Molina homered and drove in four runs to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the slumping Kansas City Royals 6-3 on Monday. Molina hit a two-run homer in the first, doubled home a run in the third and his sacrifice fly in the fourth scored Pete Kozma. While the Cardinals own the best road record, 19-9, in the majors, the Royals dropped their ninth straight home game — one shy of the franchise record set last year. The anticipated pitcher’s duel between Adam Wanwright and James Shields failed to materialize.

Wainwright (7-3), who had given up 12 hits in 22 1-3 innings in his previous three starts, allowed 12 hits, the most he has allowed in a game since Sept. 14, 2010 against the Chicago Cubs. Shields (2-6) yielded nine hits and season-highs of six runs and five walks in six innings to lose his fourth straight start.

AP Source: Talks ongoing to hire Hornacek as coach

Sports

May 26th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns appear close to hiring former ISU basketball standout and player for the NBA Jeff Hornacek, as their head coach. A person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press the Suns are in contract negotiations with Hornacek, although no deal has been finalized. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no public announcement had been made. The comments came after azcentralsports reported Sunday that Hornacek reached agreement on a three-year contract.

Hornacek, assistant coach for the Utah Jazz, played six seasons for the Suns and was part of the trade that sent Charles Barkley to the Suns from Philadelphia. Hornacek went on to have his best pro seasons as a sharpshooting guard alongside John Stockton in the Utah backcourt.

As a point guard for the Cyclones, Hornacek guided the team to the Sweet 16 in the 1986 NCAA Tournament. Hornacek left ISU with a Big-8 record of 665 career assists, still an Iowa State school record, and 1,313 career points. He was the fourth player in Cyclone basketball history to have his number retired when his No. 14 jersey was hung from the rafters of Hilton Coliseum in 1991.

Cardinals beat Kershaw, Dodgers 5-3

May 26th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Matt Carpenter drove in the go-ahead run with an infield single and Pete Kozma hit a three-run double against Clayton Kershaw, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday in the rubber game of their series. The Cardinals improved the major league’s best record to 32-17 and increased their NL Central lead over Cincinnati to 1 1/2 games.

Kozma led off the seventh with a bloop double off the glove of shortstop Dee Gordon as he dived for the ball in short center field. One out later, Carpenter grounded a single off the glove of first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, allowing Kozma to score. Pinch-hitter Matt Adams added an RBI single in the ninth.

Seth Maness (4-1) got credit for the victory in relief of starter Shelby Miller despite retiring only two of the six batters he faced.
