Cardinals Voice Shannon Recovering from Heart Surgery

Sports

August 22nd, 2013 by Jim Field

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Mike Shannon, the former St. Louis Cardinals third baseman who has been a broadcaster for the team for more than 40 years, is recovering after heart surgery.

The Cardinals said Wednesday that the 74-year-old Shannon is resting comfortably. The team says he had successful surgery Monday to replace his aorta valve.

Shannon, in a statement through the team, thanked well-wishers and said he expects to return to the broadcast booth before the end of the regular season.

Shannon played on three World Series teams during a nine-year career from 1962 to 1970, all with St. Louis. He hit .255 with 68 homers for his career.

He joined the radio broadcast starting in 1972, paired for many years with Hall of Fame broadcaster Jack Buck.

Chiefs Star Bowe has Refreshed Outlook on Life

Sports

August 22nd, 2013 by Jim Field

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe has a new contract, a new coach and a new quarterback, and with all of that a new sense of happiness when he steps on the field.

Bowe says he’s “blessed to be alive,” and that’s clear in his demeanor.

Once a moody wide receiver with a less-than-sparkling reputation, Bowe can be caught dancing around during lulls in practice and spending every extra second afterward signing autographs.

He says that he’s “just trying to let loose and be joyful,” and he thinks that may help him have one of his best seasons.

He’s in the first year of his new five-year deal, and with quarterback Alex Smith throwing him the ball, is certain that he’ll once again be among the league’s best wide receivers.

Beltran, Craig Homer to Lift Cards over Brewers

Sports

August 22nd, 2013 by Jim Field

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Carlos Beltran and Allen Craig hit towering home runs in St. Louis’ six-run second inning, and the Cardinals held off the Milwaukee Brewers 8-6 on Wednesday.

Matt Holliday also homered and Shane Robinson had three hits for the Cardinals, who are slightly behind the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL Central race.

After taking a one-run lead in the first inning on a double by Craig, the Cardinals went ahead 7-0 in the second off Brewers starter Tom Gorzelanny (3-5). Starting pitcher Jake Westbrook hit a bases-loaded double into the left-center field gap that scored two runs. He entered the game hitting only .167 with two RBIs this season.

Following Matt Carpenter’s sacrifice fly, Beltran launched a two-run shot that caromed off the center-field scoreboard. With two out, Craig hit a solo homer to right-center.

Iowa State Deep at Running Back

Sports

August 21st, 2013 by Jim Field

There is no shortage of running backs at Iowa State this season. James White is one of three senior running backs with experience and the list includes Shontrelle Johnson and Jeff Woody. White says all of the running backs bring something different to the offense.

White says regardless of who is on the field the ISU offense needs more big plays this season.

White says he likes getting the ball in the “pistol” offense.

Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads is not even thinking about how to divide up the carries.

Iowa State opens August 31st at home against UNI.

After WR Swap, Jenkins Dives into Life with Chiefs

Sports

August 21st, 2013 by Jim Field

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A.J. Jenkins never thought he’d be back in Kansas City so soon.

The former first-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers played in a preseason game against the Chiefs on Friday night at Arrowhead Stadium. On Tuesday morning, he was wearing a white shirt with that familiar arrowhead logo while participating in a walk-through before practice.

Such is the NFL, where life can be turned upside down in a matter of days.

Jenkins was traded to the Chiefs on Monday for Jon Baldwin in what amounted to a swap of wide receivers that have been disappointments. Jenkins played in three games for the 49ers last season and failed to catch a pass, while Baldwin has just 41 catches in his first two seasons.

Lohse, Brewers Beat Cardinals 6-3

Sports

August 21st, 2013 by Jim Field

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Kyle Lohse beat the Cardinals for the first time this season and Sean Halton knocked in a career-high three runs to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat St. Louis 6-3 Tuesday night.

Lohse beat the Cardinals in his fourth try this season and improved to 3-5 in nine outings overall against his former team.

Lohse left after six innings with the Brewers leading 6-3. He struck out four, walked two and allowed six hits and three runs, two coming on Yadier Molina’s two-run homer in the fourth. Molina doubled and scored in the second on Matt Adams’ single.

After John Axford and Brandon Kintzler each pitched a scoreless inning, and Jim Henderson pitched the ninth for his 19th save in 22 chances.

Lance Lynn got roughed up in the Brewers’ five-run fourth, highlighted by Halton’s two-run single with the bases loaded.
