Calvin Smith II follows in father’s footsteps

Sports

June 19th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — For Calvin Smith II, sharing the same name and being the son of Calvin Smith means carrying a lot of weight. It’s not easy following in the footsteps of a former world-record holder, world champion, Olympic medalist and Hall of Famer. That’s why, at an early age, the son decided he wasn’t going to be a 100-meter sprinter like his father, but rather would make a name for himself in his own event, the 400, and stand out on his own merits.

One thing’s for sure: He certainly inherited his dad’s speed as he competes this week at the U.S. championships, hoping to earn a spot on the world team headed to Moscow in August.

Spencer man bags $1,600 for walleye

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

June 19th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

SPENCER, Iowa (AP) — A Spencer man has caught a $1,600 walleye on Big Spirit Lake in northern Iowa. Joe Larson caught a tagged fish that was part of a contest sponsored by the Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce. In early May, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources released six tagged walleye in Big Spirit Lake, West Lake Okoboji and East Lake Okoboji for the contest. For anglers who paid $15 and registered for the extended contest, there’s still a chance to win some money for catching one of the tagged fish up until Sept. 1.

Larson caught his fish Thursday and the Chamber of Commerce released details on Tuesday. Proceeds from the Great Walleye Weekend contest go to the Easter Seals of Iowa.

DNR says Iowa boaters need to follow new laws

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

June 19th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa boaters will need to follow new laws designed to protect the state’s lakes and rivers from non-native aquatic species. The Department of Natural Resources says that beginning July 1st, it will be illegal to transport any aquatic plants on water-related equipment. Boaters also will be required to drain all water from boats and equipment before leaving a body of water, then keep drain plugs removed or opened while transporting the equipment.

Signs listing the rules will be posted at public access points. The new laws and earlier regulations are aimed at preventing the spread of creatures such as zebra mussels and Eurasian watermilfoil.

Samardzija pitches Cubs past Cardinals 4-2

Sports

June 19th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Ryan Sweeney and Cody Ransom hit back-to-back homers in a four-run first inning and that was plenty for Jeff Samardzija, who pitched the Chicago Cubs over the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 Tuesday night. Chicago started fast against Adam Wainwright (10-4) and broke a five-game losing streak in St. Louis. Carlos Beltran hit his team-high 17th homer for the Cardinals, who lost for the third time in five games but still lead the majors with a 45-26 record.

Uhl celebrates homecoming at US championships

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — U.S. distance runner and Iowa native Lisa Uhl never won a state title while competing for Fort Dodge High. Uhl returns to Drake Stadium nearly a decade later in position to qualify for the world championships. It’ll be a short commute to Des Moines for Uhl, a three-time NCAA outdoor champion, an Olympian and one of the favorites in the 10,000-meter race Thursday at the U.S. championships.

For the past 10 months, Uhl has been living in Des Moines and training with her former Iowa State coach, Corey Ihmels, after an unpleasant two-year stay in Oregon. Uhl says she’s much happier since returning to central Iowa.

Lolo Jones’ attempt at humor backfires

Sports

June 18th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Lolo Jones’ attempt at humor in a video that’s gone viral received a chilly reception from some members of the bobsledding community. Like that, the U.S. hurdler finds herself under scrutiny again. Jones posted a Vine video in which she pokes fun at a check she received for $741.84 in prize money from the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation. In the spoof, she picks up the phone and says, “I’m going to be a little bit late on my rent.”

And now, instead of concentrating on the U.S. championships this week in her hometown, she’s explaining herself. She insisted it was simply a joke and has already talked to some of her bobsledding teammates. She says, “none of the girl teammates I work with took offense.”
