Tar Heels oust NC State from CWS with 7-0 victory

Sports

June 21st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — North Carolina’s Hobbs Johnson combined with Chris McCue on a five-hitter, and the Tar Heels stayed alive in the College World Series with a 7-0 victory over North Carolina State on Thursday night. Michael Russell drove in three runs for the No. 1-seeded Tar Heels (59-11), the first on a sacrifice fly that resulted in a close play at the plate to open the scoring in the fourth inning. Johnson allowed five singles, walked two and struck out six before leaving with one out in the ninth.

NC State’s Carlos Rodon started on three days rest after throwing 108 pitches in an 8-1 win over Carolina. He gave up two runs on four hits and threw 80 pitches in his five innings. Carolina must beat UCLA twice — first on Friday and again Saturday — to reach the finals. North Carolina State finished 50-16.

Carpenter rehab stopped by lower back injury

Sports

June 21st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter’s rehab has been put on hold after he injured his lower back in a bullpen session. General manager John Mozeliak said Thursday that any contribution this season from Carpenter, sidelined since February with nerve issues on the right side of his body, would be a bonus. The 38-year-old Carpenter had been steadily progressing before the back tightened after he finished throwing Sunday. Mozeliak anticipated the team would have a better handle on the situation after other doctors in St. Louis weighed in on the back issue.

Lynn ties NL lead with 10th win as Cards top Cubs

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Lance Lynn earned his 10th victory to tie for the NL lead, Matt Holliday homered and drove in two runs, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 6-1 on Thursday night. Lynn (10-1) allowed a run on three hits in six innings with six strikeouts and has reached double digits in wins before the All-Star break both of his years in the rotation, going 11-4 last year and making the All-Star team. He joined teammate Adam Wainwright and Washington’s Jordan Zimmermann for the league lead.

Wellington Castillo homered leading off the third for the Cubs. Castillo’s second homer of the season and first since April 8 briefly tied it at 1 after David Freese’s run-scoring groundout off Scott Feldman (6-6) had given the Cardinals the lead.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Yadier Molina hit his fifth home run and Jake Westbrook pitched seven innings of two-hit ball in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 4-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs 4-1 on Wednesday night. Westbrook (3-2) worked around trouble almost the entire night in his second start since coming off the disabled list with a sore elbow. He gave up no earned runs, striking out two and walking three. Edward Mujica pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 21st save in 21 attempts.

Edwin Jackson (3-9) was pulled after he hit Jon Jay following Molina’s blast to left field. He pitched 5 1-3 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits. He struck out one and walked two.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have come to terms with Marco Gonzales, their top pick from the Major League Baseball draft this month. June 19th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa says that reserve guard Kathy Thomas is transferring. Hawkeyes coach Lisa Bluder announced Wednesday that Thomas has been released from her scholarship after two seasons. Thomas, a 5-foot-6 native of Flint, Mich., averaged just 1.6 points in 32 games off the bench in 2012-13. Bluder says Thomas wants to play closer to home.
