Sign up now for chance to rappel off one of Iowa’s tallest buildings AND raise money for charity

News, Sports

August 31st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

One of the primary annual fundraisers for the Iowa chapter of Special Olympics is next month and it involves overcoming one’s fear of heights. The event is called Over The Edge, according to Hal Pittman, president and C-E-O of Special Olympics Iowa. Participants can sign up now to rappel down the side of the Financial Center in downtown Des Moines, about 345 feet from the top, to raise money for the charity.

The unusual event will be held all day on Wednesday, September 18th, at one of the tallest buildings in the state. You can sign up through the website and then raise money for Special Olympics Iowa. The first 100 people to raise $1,000 get to take the leap. If you’re not interested in doing the deed yourself but would still like to help out the charity, Pittman says there are certainly options. Employees can get a team together at work to raise money to “toss the boss,” or you can “fling a friend” by signing up a buddy and raising the funds to get them to go over the edge.

Money raised will benefit the 11-thousand Iowans with intellectual disabilities who participate in Special Olympics. The event raised more than 35-thousand dollars last year. Learn more about Over the Edge at: www.soiowa.org.

Chiefs rookie Bray turns head in preseason finale

Sports

August 31st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tyler Bray knows that he’s probably not going to get a whole lot of snaps in a game the rest of the year as the Kansas City Chiefs’ third-string quarterback. He made the most of the ones he got in their preseason finale Thursday night. Bray threw for 169 yards and three touchdowns as the Chiefs sat their starters in a 30-8 victory over the Green Bay Packers. He was mostly going against fellow third-teamers on the Packers defense, but the performance was still impressive enough to leave Kansas City buzzing.

Especially considering Bray was passed over by all 32 teams in the NFL draft. He signed with the Chiefs as a free agent, and has already locked up the No. 3 job behind Alex Smith and Chase Daniel.

Iowa hosts Northern Illinois in key opener

Sports

August 31st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s one-point win over Northern Illinois in last season’s opener felt like an escape for the Hawkeyes. Iowa would view a similar result today (Saturday) in Iowa City, as a sign of progress.

Nearly everything about these programs has changed in the 12 months since they last met. The Hawkeyes finished last season with a six-game losing streak, while Northern Illinois responded with 12 straight wins, a Mid-American Conference title and a berth in the Orange Bowl.

The Huskies enter Kinnick Stadium with a new coach in Rod Carey. But the expectations for Northern Illinois remain high — and hardly anyone would be shocked if the Huskies finish Iowa off in the rematch.

Jones, Liriano, Pirates beat Cards for Central tie

Sports

August 31st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Slumping Garrett Jones hit his 100th career homer and drove in four runs as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis 5-0 Friday night and moved into a tie with the Cardinals for the NL Central lead. Jones had three hits and Russell Martin added his 12th homer of the season. Jose Tabata and Neil Walker got two hits as the Pirates moved within four victories of their first winning season in 21 years.

Francisco Liriano (15-6) allowed just two hits over eight innings, walking two and striking out six to reach the 15-win plateau for the first time. Jones came in hitting just .119 in August but broke out against St. Louis starter Shelby Miller (12-9).

Iowa DNR positive about rabbit, squirrel hunting

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

August 31st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa officials have a positive outlook for the state’s latest rabbit and squirrel hunting seasons. The state Department of Natural Resources says the outlook is based on population surveys and availability of food sources. Both seasons begin today (Saturday).

Officials say southern Iowa has the best rabbit densities heading into the fall, but hunters around the state should see better cottontail numbers when compared to last year. The cottontail season will run through Feb. 28. Officials expect above average numbers for squirrels this season. That’s based on the mast production of several hardwood trees, which tends to be tied to peak squirrel populations. The squirrel season runs through January 31.

Cardinals acquire reliever Axford from Brewers

Sports

August 30th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired right-handed reliever John Axford from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for a player to be named later. The 30-year-old Axford is expected to join the Cardinals on Friday night when they begin a seven-game road trip in Pittsburgh.

St. Louis general manager John Mozeliak calls Axford “a reliever that offers experience as both a setup man and closer. He’s also a pitcher who brings familiarity with the NL Central, pennant-race baseball and the postseason.”  Axford is 6-7 this season with a 4.45 ERA and 19 saves in 62 games. He led the NL with 46 saves in 2011 while helping the Brewers to the NL Central title.
