Reid’s return a success as Chiefs top Eagles 26-16

Sports

September 20th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Andy Reid’s coaching return to Philadelphia was a success Thursday night as he guided the Kansas City Chiefs past the Eagles 26-16. The Chiefs’ defense forced four turnovers and sacked Michael Vick five times, 3 1/2 by linebacker Justin Houston. Kansas City (3-0) has won more games already under Reid than it did all of last season.

Kansas City, which has not had a giveaway this season, got a 38-yard interception return by Eric Berry for a touchdown, and a 3-yard scoring run by Jamaal Charles. Ryan Succop kicked four field goals. Philadelphia had five sacks, but was undone by sloppy tackling and an inconsistent performance by the fast-tempo offense brought in by Reid’s replacement, Chip Kelly.

Reid won 140 games and six division titles in Philadelphia. Vick limped off the field with 1:34 to go after the final sack and turnover.

Andy Reid gets warm welcome from fans in Philly

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Big Red was back in Philly, wearing unfamiliar red colors and standing on the opposite sideline. Andy Reid returned to a standing ovation Thursday night at the stadium where he led the Philadelphia Eagles to some of their greatest victories. Reid received a warm welcome from a sellout crowd at the Linc when he led the Kansas City Chiefs onto the field minutes before kickoff.

Some of the same fans who chanted “Fire Andy” during a game in 2011 and desperately wanted him gone last year cheered Reid, showing their appreciation for the 14 mostly successful seasons he had in Philadelphia. Reid exchanged handshakes with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and coach Chip Kelly during pregame warmups, and got a hug from injured Eagles receiver Jeremy Maclin.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs scratched their top two tight ends on their depth chart, Anthony Fasano and Travis Kelce, for Thursday night’s game at Philadelphia. Fasano, who has four receptions for 34 yards, has an injured ankle. Kelce has a bruised right knee. Also inactive for the Chiefs was quarterback Tyler Bray, linebackers Josh Martin and Nico Johnson, center Eric Kush, and defensive tackle Jaye Howard.

Philadelphia’s inactives included quarterback Matt Barkley, cornerbacks Jordan Poyer and Roc Carmichael, offensive tackles Dennis Kelly and Matt Tobin, tight end Emil Igwenagu and defensive end Damion Square.

Rockies outlast Cardinals in 15, 7-6

DENVER (AP) — Corey Dickerson’s RBI triple with one out in the bottom of the 15th inning gave the Colorado Rockies a 7-6 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday. Charlie Blackmon finished with four hits and Troy Tulowitzki and Todd Helton homered for the Rockies in tying the second-longest game in Coors Field history. Matt Holliday had three hits for the Cardinals, who had their NL Central Division lead over Pittsburgh trimmed to one game. The Pirates beat San Diego 10-1 on Thursday.

DJ LeMahieu started the winning rally with a one-out single to right. Dickerson then drilled a line drive into the right-field corner as LeMahieu rounded the bases. The relay from second baseman Matt Carpenter beat LeMahieu but catcher Yadier Molina couldn’t control the ball as LeMahieu crawled to touch home.

Chiefs swap Jayhawks on practice squad

Sports

September 19th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have released fullback Toben Opurum and signed safety Bradley McDougald to their practice squad in a swap of former Kansas standouts. Both players joined the Chiefs in May as rookie free agents.

McDougald was active for last Sunday’s win over Dallas but did not play. He was released from the active roster and brought back to the practice squad on Wednesday. The Chiefs made room by releasing Opurum, who had spent the first two weeks of the regular season on the practice squad.

Wainwright lifts Cards to 4-3 win over Rockies

Sports

September 19th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DENVER (AP) — Adam Wainwright pitched effectively into the eighth after a shaky start and helped himself at the plate with three hits as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Colorado Rockies 4-3 on Wednesday night to expand their lead in the NL Central race. Wainwright gave up two runs in the first and then found his groove to earn his 17th win, second-most in the NL this season.

He went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs to help the Cardinals stretch their lead to two games over Pittsburgh after the Pirates lost 3-2 loss to San Diego. St. Louis also reduced its magic number for clinching a playoff spot to three with 10 games to play.

Tyler Chatwood allowed four runs in six innings before being lifted for a pinch hitter. Chatwood is rounding back into form after missing nearly a month with an inflamed right elbow.

Cyclones try to fix struggling run game

Sports

September 18th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State is averaging just 3.3 yards per carry through two games. It’s no coincidence that Iowa State lost both of those games. The Cyclones (0-2) stumbled to just 59 yards rushing on 24 carries in a 27-21 loss last week to the Hawkeyes — and they didn’t have a single run longer than 9 yards.

Iowa State’s young and banged-up offensive line has taken much of the blame, with senior running back Shontrelle Johnson saying that a lot of the linemen are still feeling their way through things. The Cyclones should get starting center Tom Farniok back for their next game, at Tulsa on Sept. 26. Farniok’s return should help the line gain the continuity it’s lacked this season.
