Iowa State to Improve Jack Trice Stadium After Large Donation

Sports

November 25th, 2013 by admin

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State says it will use a $25 million donation to close the south end zone of Jack Trice Stadium and make it a true bowl.

Athletic director Jamie Pollard says the gift from Reiman Publications founders Roy and Bobbi Reiman will also allow the school to create an “inspiring campus entrance.”

The end zone set to be closed faces University Boulevard, the road many use to enter campus. It currently has a set of bleachers between a pair of grassy hills.

Final plans for the project have yet to be developed. But Pollard says the school hopes to be completed by the start of the 2015 season.

The project will go in front of the Iowa Board of Regents for approval in February.

Samantha Logic had 17 points and ten rebounds to lead the Hawkeyes who improve to 5-1 on the season. Amber Sorensen had 15 to lkead the Panthers as they fall to 2-3.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Outside linebacker Tamba Hali left the Kansas City Chiefs game against San Diego Sunday, after rolling his right ankle while attempting to get into the Chargers’ backfield. Hali tried to stand up before falling to one knee in the second quarter of Sunday’s game. The two-time Pro Bowl pick was examined by trainers before he was helped off the field. Hali climbed onto the back of a waiting cart and was driven to the locker room.  Frank Zombo took over for Hali.

Hali entered the game tied for fifth in the NFL with nine sacks. He needed two more sacks to pass Art Still for the third most in franchise history.

St. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) — Evan Smotrycz led all scorers and tied a career-high 20 points to help lift Maryland 80-66 over Northern Iowa Sunday night to earn a berth in the finals of the Paradise Jam basketball tournament. Smotrycz grabbed 9 rebounds and scored three 3-pointers in leading Maryland (3-2) in a second-half surge over UNI (2-3). Maryland will face either Providence or LaSalle in Monday’s final.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Hallie Christofferson scored 25 points to lead No. 22 Iowa State to an 89-47 blowout over Drake on Sunday. Christofferson, leading the Big 12 in shooting, was 8 of 10 from the field, including two 3-pointers, and was joined in double digits by Seanna Johnson and Brynn Williamson with 14 points apiece, and Jadda Buckley with 12. Johnson made it a double-double with 11 rebounds as well.

The undefeated Cyclones (5-0) took control of the game with a 14-0 run to close out the first half, carrying a 40-22 advantage into the break. Iowa State picked up right where it left off, out-scoring the Bulldogs 49-25 in the second half.

Lizzy Wendell led Drake (2-3) with 15 points, including the game’s first score — a layup that gave the Bulldogs an opening lead. Christofferson erased it moments later with a 3-pointer and the Cyclones pulled away.

AP source: SS Peralta, Cardinals reach 4-year deal

Sports

November 24th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that free agent shortstop Jhonny Peralta and the St. Louis Cardinals have agreed on a four-year contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday because there was no official announcement. The two-time All-Star needed to pass a physical to complete the contract.  Other media outlets had first reported the deal.

The 31-year-old Peralta was suspended 50 games last season for his involvement in the Biogenesis drug scandal. He returned to the Detroit Tigers at the end of the season, but he became expendable because the team had traded for young shortstop Jose Iglesias.

St. Louis went to the World Series last month and lost in six games to Boston. Pete Kozma and Daniel Descalso are generally good fielders, but were light hitters.

Rivers leads Chargers to 41-38 win over Chiefs

Sports

November 24th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Philip Rivers threw for 392 yards and three touchdowns, the final one a 26-yarder to Seyi Ajirotutu with 24 seconds remaining, to give San Diego a 41-38 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday and end the Chargers’ three-game losing streak.

The Chiefs had taken the lead when Alex Smith hit Dwayne Bowe in tight coverage for a go-ahead score with 1:22 left. But the Chargers (5-6) still had two timeouts, and they used both of them to quickly move downfield. Ajirotutu’s TD was just his third catch of the season. It also represented the eighth and final lead change in the game.

Smith threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns for the Chiefs, who dropped their second straight after a 9-0 start. They also lost top pass rusher Tamba Hali and Justin Houston to injuries and now have to turn their attention to the Denver Broncos next week.

Chiefs without 2 OL starters vs Chargers

Sports

November 24th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are without starting right guard Jon Asamoah and right tackle Eric Fisher because of injuries against the San Diego Chargers. Geoff Schwartz was starting Sunday in place of Asamoah, who hurt his calf and shoulder in last week’s loss to Denver. Donald Stephenson is starting for Fisher, who also has an injured shoulder.

The Chiefs also are missing starting defensive tackle Mike DeVito because of a knee injury, though defensive end Tyson Jackson is active despite a lingering shoulder injury. San Diego is missing starting left tackle King Dunlap because of a strained neck and starting outside linebacker Jarret Johnson because of surgery on his hand.

Chargers wide receiver Eddie Royal is active despite not practicing with a toe injury. You can hear the game on KJAN beginning at Noon, today (Sunday).

Rohach leads Iowa St past Kansas 34-0

Sports

November 24th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Freshman Grant Rohach passed for a season-best 300 yards and two touchdowns and Iowa State beat Kansas 34-0 on a frigid Saturday night for its first Big 12 victory. James White and Shontrelle Johnson each ran for a touchdown and Cole Netten kicked two field goals for the Cyclones (2-9, 1-7), who broke a seven-game losing streak at home and sent KU to its 24th straight road loss.

Just one week after breaking a 27-game conference losing streak, the Jayhawks (3-8, 1-7) failed to capitalize on some early scoring opportunities and never got much going in the second half, either. Rohach, who had not thrown a touchdown pass in his five previous games, finished 15 of 20 with one interception and scoring throws of 58 yards to Aaron Wimberly and 15 yards to Quenton Bundrage.

It was the coldest game in Jack Trice Stadium history — 8 degrees Fahrenheit at kickoff.
