Chiefs Out to Win, Not Win Beauty Pageants

Sports

October 31st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t into winning beauty pageants. They don’t care about putting up big numbers on offense or polishing off shiny, lopsided victories. Ugly works just as well. It’s a good thing, because the Chiefs haven’t had a breezy win for weeks. Instead, they’ve relied on a blue-collar, throwback-style defense that’s more comfortable sticking a hand in the mud than getting a high-priced manicure to stack up eight wins in eight games.

Then again, after blowing out Jacksonville in their season opener, the Chiefs have played so many nail-biting games that maybe stopping for a manicure isn’t such a bad idea. They head to Buffalo trying to improve to 9-0 on Sunday. You can hear the game on KJAN.

Red Sox win WS title, beat Cards 6-1 in Game 6

Sports

October 31st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

BOSTON (AP) — David Ortiz and the Boston Red Sox romped to their third World Series championship in 10 seasons, thumping October ace Michael Wacha and the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1 Wednesday night in Game 6. Shane Victorino drove in four runs and John Lackey pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning as the Red Sox clinched a crown on their own field for the first time since 1918.

Fenway Park was rollicking, with the crowd standing from the very first pitch. Victorino lined a three-run double off the Green Monster in the third, and the cheers, chants and singing of “Sweet Caroline” only got louder after that. Many fans paid over $1,000 per ticket for this night, eager to be part of an in-house celebration that had been building for nearly a century.

Ortiz drew three walks and scored twice. He reached base a whopping 19 times in 25 plate appearances.

ISU’s Christofferson Named a Candidate for Senior CLASS Award

Sports

October 30th, 2013 by Jim Field

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Iowa State senior women’s basketball player Hallie Christofferson has been selected as a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

Christofferson holds a 3.41 grade point average while majoring in graphic design. She was a member of the Big 12 honor roll and was named an ISU Scholar-Athlete in 2013.

Christofferson has participated in various community service projects during her time at Iowa State. The senior has volunteered with the St. Jude’s Walk the past three years, the I-35 Program and assisted with Jr. Cyclone clinics among other activities.

On the court, Christofferson has established herself as one of the best players in the country. She was named an honorable mention All-American by the AP and WBCA last season. Her performance also did not go unnoticed by league coaches as she was one of just four student-athletes in the Big 12 to be named a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 First-Team. She was most recently named to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 30 list, which is given to the nation’s top player.

Christofferson is also the only returning player in the nation to have led her team in field goal percentage (.516), three-point percentage (.401), free-throw percentage (.862) and points per game (15.6).

Christofferson is one of 30 student-athletes named to the list, which will be narrowed to 10 midway through the regular season. At that point, fan voting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the recipient of the award.

Iowa State is one of just five schools in the country to have a student-athlete named to the initial list the last two seasons joining California, Baylor, Penn State and Kentucky. Chelsea Poppens represented the Cyclones last season and was named as one of 10 finalists.

Chiefs waive Brock, make series of roster moves

Sports

October 30th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have waived tight end Kevin Brock and elevated offensive lineman Rokevious Watkins from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. The Chiefs also signed tight end Dominique Jones to the practice squad Wednesday.

Brock had three catches for 36 yards in four games for the Chiefs this season. He’d become expendable with the return of Anthony Fasano from an ankle sprain a couple of weeks ago. Watkins has been on the practice squad since Sept. 1. He played in one game for the St. Louis Rams as a rookie a year ago.

Jones started three of the 10 games he played in two seasons with the Colts. The former undrafted free agent has three catches for 42 yards.
