ST. LOUIS (AP) — That was one short break for Tim McCarver. The former major league catcher tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Thursday night that he is near a deal to broadcast about 30 Cardinals games this season for Fox Sports Midwest. McCarver retired from his position on Fox’s national baseball broadcast after the World Series.

McCarver made his major league debut with St. Louis in 1959 and helped the Cardinals win two World Series titles in the 1960s. The 72-year-old McCarver tells the Post-Dispatch that coming back to St. Louis is “fabulous, a complete merry-go-round, it’s wonderful.”

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Senior guard Devyn Marble is playing like the star Iowa coach Fran McCaffery has long been searching for. Marble is averaging a career-high 16.4 points per game for the 14th-ranked Hawkeyes (14-3, 3-1 Big Ten), and he’s been at his best against Iowa’s toughest opponents.

Marble scored 22 points in Sunday’s win over then-No. 3 Ohio State, perhaps the biggest win in McCaffery’s four seasons at Iowa. Marble and the Hawkeyes host Minnesota (13-4, 2-2) on Sunday.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard says he’s “disappointed” that a judge has temporarily reinstated reserve basketball player Bubu Palo. Palo was suspended in 2012 after being charged with second-degree sexual assault. The charge was dropped a year ago and the university’s Office of Judicial Affairs cleared Palo to return to the team. The university’s decision was then appealed. Palo was found to have violated Iowa State’s student code of conduct and kicked off the team.

A Webster County judge on Thursday issued a temporary stay for Palo, allowing him to play pending the outcome of further court proceedings. A final hearing date on Palo’s status has not been set. Palo averaged 2.8 points in 17 games last season.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Linda Stepney scored 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds and West Virginia used a 13-point first-half lead to knock off Number 13 Iowa State 73-59 Wednesday night. It’s the second straight year the Mountaineers have beaten a ranked Cyclones squad at Ames. West Virginia (15-2, 4-1 Big 12) hit seven 3-pointers in the first half and were 12 of 30 overall.

Iowa State (14-2, 3-2) cut the lead to six, 59-53 on a 3-pointer by Jadda Buckley with 6:57 left to play, but Stepney scored a layup and 3-pointer back-to-back to push the lead back to 11 points and was 4 of 4 from the free throw line in the final 1:28 to put the game away.

Bria Holmes and Christal Caldwell finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Mountaineers. Hallie Christofferson had 21 points to lead the Cyclones, which lost its second straight game. Buckley added another 15.

CHICAGO (AP) — Milton Doyle scored 28 points and Loyola (Ill.) defeated Drake 70-60 on Wednesday night. Devon Turk added 14 points and Christian Thomas and Jeff White 10 apiece for the Ramblers (7-10, 2-3 Missouri Valley), who snapped a two-game losing streak by shooting 50 percent from the floor. They also picked up 15 points off turnovers.

The Bulldogs (10-7, 1-4), who lost their fourth in a row, got 19 points from Richard Carter and 12 from Aaron Hawley while Jacob Enevold Jensen grabbed 11 rebounds. Tied 32-32 at the half, the Ramblers went on a 17-1 run to take a 62-52 lead on Doyle’s basket with 5:37 remaining. The Bulldogs failed to get a field goal during the 7-minute run while Turk and Thomas had five points each for Loyola during that stretch.

White’s layup with 1:43 remaining had the Ramblers up by 14, their largest lead of the game.
