Marble’s 22 lift No. 20 Iowa past No. 3 OSU, 84-74

Sports

January 12th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Roy Devin Marble scored 22 points, Aaron White added 19 and No. 20 Iowa ended the game on a 22-9 run to hand No. 3 Ohio State its second loss of the week, 84-74 on Sunday.  Melsahn Besabe had 11 points and 10 rebounds, Mike Gesell added 11 points and Jarrod Uthoff had 10 off the bench for the Hawkeyes (14-3, 3-1 Big Ten), who ended a string of eight straight losses to the Buckeyes. It was Iowa’s first win over a top 5 team since an 83-65 victory at No. 2 Missouri on Dec. 15, 2001.

LaQuinton Ross scored 22 points, Amir Williams had 11 and Lenzelle Smith Jr. 10 for Ohio State (15-2, 2-2), which had opened with 15 consecutive wins. The Buckeyes fell 72-68 in overtime at No. 5 Michigan State on Tuesday night.

Iowa State PG Kane’s status uncertain for Kansas

Sports

January 12th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State isn’t sure if point guard DeAndre Kane will be available for Monday night’s game against No. 18 Kansas because of an ankle injury. Kane sprained his left ankle late in Saturday’s 82-75 loss to Oklahoma, the first of the season for the ninth-ranked Cyclones (14-1, 2-1 Big 12).

Kane was carried off the court by teammates, but coach Fred Hoiberg says his availability for the matchup against the rival Jayhawks (11-4, 2-0) will be a “game day” decision.  Kane says his sprained ankle remains sore, adding that he will try to do everything he can to play against the Jayhawks.

Kane, a senior transfer from Marshall, has blossomed into one of the nation’s most versatile players. He is averaging 16.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game.

Also signed by the Chiefs on Saturday were linebacker Jordan Campbell, cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke, defensive tackle Dominique Hamilton, offensive tackle R.J. No. 15 Oklahoma State beats No. 11 Iowa St 69-62

Sports

January 12th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Tiffany Bias scored 22 points and 15th-ranked Oklahoma State beat Number 11 Iowa State 69-62 on Saturday, knocking the Cyclones from the ranks of the unbeaten. Brittney Martin had 14 for the Cowgirls (14-1, 3-1 Big 12), who used a 12-0 run to take control of the first matchup between top-15 teams in Ames in 12 years.

Iowa State (14-1, 3-1) had pulled within 63-60 before Bias hit a floater in traffic and a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left. Hallie Christofferson had 20 points to lead the Cyclones, who shot just 3 of 17 from 3-point range. Iowa State entered Saturday as the only school in the country with unbeaten men’s and women’s teams — but both lost in a span of seven hours.

Northern Iowa beats Drake 76-66

Sports

January 12th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Deon Mitchel and Wes Washpun scored 17 each on Saturday night and Northern Iowa remained unbeaten at home by defeating Drake 76-66. Over the final six minutes, UNI outscored Drake 23-8 to rally from a five-point deficit to a comfortable lead at the conclusion. UNI made only six of its first 24 from 3-point range but hit all three 3-point attempts during that closing stretch.

The Panthers trailed 61-58 when Washpun’s layup with 4:05 to play sparked a 10-point run. On the next possession, UNI took the lead for good at 63-61 on Matt Bohannon’s 3-pointer with 3:37 to go. Seth Tuttle and Bohannon each scored 11 and Nate Buss added 10 points for the Panthers (9-7, 3-1 Missouri Valley).

Jordan Daniels led Drake (10-6, 1-3) with 18 points and Aaron Hawley had 11. Drake took its biggest lead of the game at 58-53 on Carter’s layup with 6:54 remaining.

Iowa’s McCaffery is back, but are No. 3 Buckeyes?

Sports

January 11th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Iowa coach Fran McCaffery is coming back. It remains to be seen if No. 3 Ohio State’s swagger returns, too. McCaffery’s one-game suspension for his blow-up with the officials in a loss at No. 4 Wisconsin this week is behind him. He’ll be on the sideline when his 20th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes travel to play the Buckeyes on Sunday afternoon.

Iowa has already rebounded from that loss to the Badgers, routing Northwestern 93-67 on Thursday. Now eyes will be trained on the Buckeyes to see if they can rally after suffering their first loss of the season, a 72-68 overtime defeat at No. 5 Michigan State on Tuesday night.

Ohio State’s players and coach Thad Matta realize they cannot afford a second straight slip.
