ISU’s Farniok On Rimington Award Watch List

Sports

May 19th, 2014 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – Two-time All-Big 12 center Tom Farniok was named to the 2014 Rimington Trophy Award Spring Watch List, announced today by the Rimington Award.

The Rimington Award is given annually to the nation’s best center and is named after Dave Rimington, who is considered one of college football’s greatest centers during his All-American career at Nebraska (1979-82).

A native of Sioux Falls, S.D., Farniok enters his senior season with 35 career starts, the most by any current Cyclone. He was Iowa State’s Arthur Floyd Scott Award winner in 2013 as the Cyclones’ top offensive lineman.

Farniok was an honorable mention All-Big 12 pick as a sophomore (2012) and added second-team All-Big 12 accolades by the San Antionio Express-News as a junior (2013).

Farniok will earn his degree in the summer and begin coursework in graduate school.

ISU signs Greek center Tsalmpouris

Sports

May 19th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State says it has signed 7-foot-1 Greek center Georgios Tsalmpouris (sal-BORE-us) to a letter of intent. Tsalmpouris, who doesn’t turn 18 until next month, is a member of Greece’s national team. Tsalmpouris will be just the fifth 7-foot player in school history, and he’ll be eligible to play starting next season.

Tsalmpouris and 6-foot-9 center Jameel McKay should help provide Iowa State with the post presence it lacked at times last season. But it’s unclear if Tsalmpouris will redshirt or be ready to contribute as a freshman

Cyclones coach Fred Hoiberg says Tsalmpouris fits Iowa State’s style of play because he can run the floor and shoot from the perimeter.

Braves rally past Cardinals for 6-5 victory

Sports

May 18th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Ryan Doumit scored on a wild pitch and the Atlanta Braves got two runs in the ninth inning to rally past the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Freddie Freeman started a ninth-inning rally with a leadoff single off St. Louis closer Trevor Rosenthal (0-2).

With two outs, Freeman went to third on pinch hitter Ryan Doumit’s double to right. Rosenthal intentionally walked pinch hitter Evan Gattis to load the bases and then walked Jordan Schafer to force in the tying run. Carlos Martinez relieved Rosenthal and had a wild pitch while facing Ramiro Pena that scored Doumit to make it 6-5.

Dan Carpenter (3-0) pitched 1 1-3 innings of scoreless relief for the win. Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth for his 11th save in 13 chances. The save was the 150th of Kimbrel’s career.
