WASHINGTON (AP) — Denard Span hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning and the Washington Nationals, with Bryce Harper back in the lineup, rallied past the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 Sunday. The Nationals loaded the bases in the ninth against Seth Maness (0-1) when Danny Espinosa singled with one out for his third hit, Jose Lobaton singled through the right side of the infield and pinch hitter Nate McLouth walked.
In his second game since being activated from the seven-day disabled list following a concussion, Span lofted a fly to left field. Espinosa easily beat the throw from John Jay, who shifted over from right field as St. Louis used a five-man infield.
Harper started in left field and went 1 for 4 with his first stolen base of the season. The two-time All-Star was pulled from the game a day earlier for what manager Matt Williams called a “lack of hustle.”
WASHINGTON (AP) – Lance Lynn won his fourth straight start and the St. Louis Cardinals took advantage of another shaky fielding performance by Washington, scoring three unearned runs to beat Jordan Zimmermann and the Nationals 4-3 Saturday. Tony Cruz drove in two runs for the Cardinals, who have won nine of the last 10 games between the teams. St. Louis took control with a three-run second inning fueled by third baseman Anthony Rendon’s throwing error.
Lynn (4-0) gave up one run and five hits over 5 2-3 innings in becoming the NL’s first four-game winner. Trevor Rosenthal worked the ninth for his fifth save, but not without difficulty. Washington put runners on second and third with one out, and Kevin Frandsen drove in a run with a groundout before Rosenthal struck out Jayson Werth on three pitches.
Zimmermann (1-1) allowed four runs, only one of them earned, in seven innings.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa recruiting coordinator Eric Johnson is leaving the program after 15 seasons with the Hawkeyes. Coach Kirk Ferentz announced Johnson’s sudden departure on Saturday, saying he left to pursue a career opportunity outside of football. Johnson spent the past 10 years coordinating Iowa’s recruiting efforts.
Johnson, who has been with Ferentz since 1999, also worked with Iowa’s defensive line the past two seasons. Johnson says his tenure in Iowa was a “great time” in his family’s life and added that Ferentz was the best teacher and leader he’s ever been around.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina’s throwing error combined with Michael Wacha’s wild pitch to allow two unearned runs in the seventh inning, breaking a tie and helping Gio Gonzalez and the Washington Nationals beat St. Louis 3-1 Friday night.
Gonzalez (3-1) allowed one run and four hits in seven innings, retiring the last 11 batters he faced. He finished with seven strikeouts and one walk as Washington ended an eight-game losing streak against St. Louis that dated to Game 5 of the teams’ 2012 NL division series.
Wacha (2-1) gave up five hits and one earned run. But a night after the Nationals made three errors — they initially were charged with four, but one was changed to a hit Friday — it was the Cardinals’ turn to be sloppy.
