NEW YORK (AP) — Lucas Duda hit a long home run and the New York Mets threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the ninth inning to hold off the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 Wednesday night with a stiff wind whipping through Citi Field. Jonathon Niese earned his first win of the season, and shortstop Ruben Tejada cut down Matt Carpenter for the second out of the ninth on a strong relay from center fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis.

St. Louis manager Mike Matheny challenged the call, which was upheld following a replay review of 1 minute, 20 seconds that showed catcher Travis d’Arnaud nicked Carpenter with a sweep tag near his armpit. Cardinals right-hander Michael Wacha set career highs with 10 strikeouts and five walks in the shortest of his 14 regular-season starts in the majors. A bizarre outing if ever there was one — but it was that sort of night.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs will have to get used to playing away from Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City opens the season at home against Tennessee on Sept. 7, and then has just one more home game over the first seven weeks — the Patriots visit on Sept. 29. Otherwise, the Chiefs will be taking trips to Denver, Miami, San Francisco and San Diego along with having a week off during the first half of the season. The NFL announced the schedules for all teams Wednesday night.

If the Chiefs can navigate their early road swing, they’ll have an opportunity to finish strong at home. They welcome cross-state rival St. Louis on Oct. 26, and play home games against Seattle, Denver and Oakland before wrapping the regular season against San Diego on Dec. 28.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s defense was back among the nation’s elite last season. The Hawkeyes offense failed to follow suit. Getting both units to play at an equally high level will likely be crucial to Iowa’s hopes of competing for the inaugural Big Ten West title.

The Hawkeyes will be among the league favorites because it has a lot of returning starters and what appears to be a manageable schedule. But Iowa will need to score more than the 26.3 points it averaged a year ago, and quarterback Jake Rudock says the unit’s continuity will be a big plus next season.

The Hawkeyes wrap up spring practice on Saturday with a scrimmage at Kinnick Stadium.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – A Cincinnati restaurant owner is suing former Cardinals outfielder Jim Edmonds over the name of the Precinct, a restaurant he co-owns in downtown St. Louis. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Jeff Ruby filed a federal lawsuit against Edmonds’ business late last year. The suit alleges that Edmonds’ steakhouse infringes on the Ohio restaurant group’s trademark.

The St. Louis Precinct features police and sports memorabilia and is located next to the new city police headquarters building. The Precinct in Cincinnati opened in 1981 and occupies a former police patrol building. Edmonds played for the Cardinals from 2000 to 2007. He later played for the Cincinnati Reds before retiring from baseball in 2011.

NEW YORK (AP) — Adam Wainwright threw seven neat innings before leaving with a knee injury, and Jon Jay hit a two-run single that sent the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-0 victory over the New York Mets on Tuesday night.

Left fielder Matt Holliday robbed Chris Young of a tying homer, one night after the Mets played some dazzling defense of their own to post a shutout in the series opener.

Wainwright faced the minimum through four innings and outpitched Dillon Gee. It was the second consecutive scoreless start for Wainwright, who tossed a two-hit shutout last Thursday at Washington.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A proposal to provide a state tax credit of up to $2 million to the Knoxville Raceway has advanced in the Iowa Senate. The plan received the approval of the Senate Ways and Means Committee on Tuesday and is now eligible for floor debate.

Under the proposal, the racetrack in Knoxville would receive a state sales tax rebate to help fund an expansion. The rebate would be capped at $2 million or 25 percent of the total project cost, and the track would be eligible to receive the rebate from Jan. 1, 2015, to Jan. 1, 2025.

The offer follows a similar credit provided for the Iowa Speedway at Newton, approved by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Terry Branstad earlier this month.
