Animals from Iowa included in Puppy Bowl XI

News, Sports

January 9th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Iowa will be represented in a popular TV program that airs on Super Bowl Sunday. Puppy Bowl XI (eleven) will include six canines from Iowa. The program airs on Animal Planet before the Super Bowl on February 1 ((at 2 p.m. Iowa time)).

The Iowa pups — Blue, Falcor, Kojak, Lorelai, Scarlet and Columbo — are all from the Heinz 57 Pet Rescue based in DeSoto. The dogs were sent to New York in October for the show’s taping. This marks the fourth year in a row that animals from the Heinz 57 Pet Rescue have taken part in the Puppy Bowl.

Native Iowans receive Hall of Fame consideration

Sports

January 9th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Three people with Iowa connections are getting Hall of Fame recognition in pro and college football. Cedar Rapids native Kurt Warner, who played college football at Northern Iowa, and then went on to a storybook pro career that took him from the Iowa Barnstormers, N-F-L Europe and the St. Louis Rams, is on the list for enshrinment in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Warner stepped in after an injury and took the Rams to a Super Bowl win and was named M-V-P. He appeared in two more Super Bowls with the Rams and Arizona Cardinals — losing both games in the final seconds.

The pro football class will be announced January 31st. The 2015 College Football Hall of Fame class just announced includes Trev Alberts, who played at Northern University High School in Cedar Falls before going on to Nebraska. Kansas State coach Bill Snyder is also in the class. Snyder came to the University of Iowa as an assistant to Hayden Fry in 1979. He stayed for 10 years and helped turn around the Hawkeye program before going to K-State.

Michigan State rallies past Iowa 75-61

Sports

January 9th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Travis Trice scored 25 points and hit seven 3-pointers and Michigan State rallied to pound Iowa 75-61 on Thursday night, its ninth straight win over the Hawkeyes. Branden Dawson had 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Spartans (11-5, 2-1 Big Ten), who came back from an 11-point halftime deficit to post one of their biggest wins of the season.

Michigan State opened the second half on a 25-9 run and never looked back. The Trice-led Spartans were 8 of 9 from 3-point range in the final 20 minutes. Gabe Olaseni tied a career high with 18 points for the Hawkeyes (11-5, 2-1), who were outscored 47-22 in the second half.

Iowa names QB Beathard as starter, replacing Rudock

Sports

January 8th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa has named C.J. Beathard its starting quarterback, replacing two-year starter Jake Rudock. Beathard was ranked first on a new depth chart released Thursday. Beathard, who will be a junior next season, was 52 of 92 passing last season with 5 TDs in relief of Rudock.

Rudock, who will be a senior, threw for 2,436 yards and 16 TDs last season. But Iowa’s offense was inconsistent, and it bottomed out in a 45-28 loss to Tennessee in the TaxSlayer Bowl that was much more lopsided than the final score.

Coach Kirk Ferentz also says he’ll meet with the media on Wednesday to discuss the program.
