Iowa beats Oregon 3-1 in NCAA regional opener

Sports

May 29th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Tyler Peyton limited Oregon to one run in 7 1-3 innings to help second-seeded Iowa beat the third-seeded Ducks 3-1 on Friday in their NCAA regional opener. Peyton (7-4) struck out five and didn’t walk a batter to help the Hawkeyes (40-16) win for the first time in NCAA tournament play since the 1972 College World Series.

Iowa had baserunners in every inning but the first. Nick Day’s RBI single in the second inning put the Hawkeyes in front, and Nick Roscetti added RBI groundouts in the third and fifth innings. Iowa stranded 13 men on base and left the bases loaded in three innings.

Oregon (37-24), making its fourth consecutive NCAA appearance, was limited to a third-inning RBI single from Austin Grebeck. Phil Craig-St. Louis went 2 for 3. On Saturday, Iowa will face the Missouri State-Canisus winner. Oregon will play the loser. The Missouri State vs. Canisus game will be played early Saturday as part of a tripleheader after being rained out on Friday night.

Cardinals rally, complete sweep of Diamondbacks

Sports

May 28th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jason Heyward atoned for a critical error with a game-tying homer leading off the ninth inning and the St. Louis Cardinals scored the winning run on catcher Jordan Pachecho’s throwing error, completing a three-game sweep with a 4-3 victory on Wednesday night.

Mark Trumbo homered for Arizona, which has lost nine of its last 10 against the Cardinals. The Diamondbacks have re-tooled with former Cardinals Tony La Russa as chief baseball officer, pitching consultant Dave Duncan and first base coach Dave McKay.

Pacheco replaced Tuffy Gosewisch, who jammed his left knee on a groundout in the sixth. Third baseman Yasmany Tomas threw home for a force out on Jhonny Peralta’s grounder against Brad Ziegler (0-1) and Pachecho tried for a double play but threw well above first baseman Paul Goldschmidt’s head.

Seth Maness (1-0) got the last two outs of the ninth for St. Louis to get the victory.
