CHICAGO (AP) – More than 70 years after he hoped to make his major league debut, a World War II veteran has fulfilled his goal of pitching at Wrigley Field. Tony Gianunzio walked to the mound Sunday and threw out the first ball before the Cubs hosted the Kansas City Royals. Wearing a Cubs cap, the 92-year-old Gianunzio threw from just in front of the rubber. His pitch reached the plate on a couple of bounces.
Gianunzio was a teenage pitching prospect and being looked at by the Cubs when he joined the U.S. Coast Guard. He didn’t return to baseball after the war. Gianunzio lives in the area of Kalamazoo, Michigan. He taught English and writing in high school for nearly 40 years. His ceremonial pitch, by the way, was better than the one thrown by actor Joe Mantegna before the game. His toss bounced several times and was way wide of the plate.
Wendy Ausdemore always made a difference on a basketball court. Now she’s ready to do the same from the sidelines. The Daily NonPareil reports the former Miss Iowa Basketball and University of Iowa player is now the head girls coach at Glenwood. She was hired late last week after six-year coach Barry Loeffelbein decided in April to step down for family reasons.
Ausdemore – a 2005 Tri-Center graduate – was the freshman coach last winter. She landed the head position after another candidate decided not to accept it. At Iowa, the 6-foot-2 standout was a three-year starter known for her ability to play anywhere on the floor, Ausdemore is a head coach for the first time. She spent two years as an assistant at Coe College under former Iowa player Randi Petersen. She has been at Glenwood the last two years as a middle school business teacher and the JV volleyball coach, though she will focus exclusively on basketball moving forward.
Ausdemore inherits a program that went 11-12 last year and 91-46 (.664) overall under Loeffelbein. The Rams went to the state tournament in 2012, ending a 33-year drought.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Yasmani Grandal’s three-run homer capped a four-run sixth inning off Michael Wacha and the Los Angeles Dodgers prevailed for a rain-soaked 5-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night. Carlos Frias (4-2) allowed an unearned run and five hits in seven innings, an impressive bounce back after surrendering a career-worst 10 runs his last time out. Frias bunted for his first career hit in the seventh.
Howie Kendrick’s RBI single tied it at 1 two at-bats before Grandal, activated from the 7-day concussion disabled list earlier Saturday, hammered a 3-1 pitch an estimated 435 feet to left-center. The Dodgers, held hitless for the first 5 1-3 innings, ended a drought of 42 consecutive scoreless innings on the road, including a 3-0 loss in the series opener Friday.
Wacha (7-1) gave up four runs and three hits in 5 2-3 innings for the Cardinals, whose five-game winning streak ended. Matt Holliday of the St. Louis Cardinals was taken out of Saturday night’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers when he was feeling ill after running the bases in the fourth inning.
Holliday started a day after the Cardinals sent their No. 3 hitter home suffering from flu-like symptoms. Saturday’s game began after a rain delay of 2 hours, 20 minutes and rain resumed not long after the first pitch. Holliday walked to lead off the third, extending his franchise-record streak of reaching safely for the 44th straight game to start the season. Jason Heyward replaced him in the lineup after the fourth inning and played right field with Randal Grichuk moving to left.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Matt Hall struck out 11 over eight innings and Missouri State advanced to the championship round of the Springfield Regional with a 5-3 win over Iowa on Saturday night. Justin Paulsen, whose long drive down the right-field line was ruled foul in the second, broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth with an RBI single. Spencer Johnson and Jake Burger also had RBI singles in the inning, putting the Bears (47-10) up to stay.
Hall (11-2) scattered seven hits, and the Bears overcame three errors, including a pair of throwing miscues that helped put Iowa ahead 2-0 in the second. Hall didn’t allow a runner to reach second after the third inning, retiring 15 of his final 19 batters. Bryan Young allowed an RBI double in the ninth, but got the save.
Reliever Ryan Erickson (4-1) took the loss for Iowa (40-17), which plays Oregon in an elimination game today (Sunday).
The Boys State Tennis Tournament began Friday and will conclude today.
In Class 1A at Byrne’s Park in Waterloo all local athletes competing in singles play bowed out of the tournament Friday. Atlantic’s Nick Podhajsky lost his opening match 6-1, 6-3 to Brady Plueger of Spencer and then lost in the consolation bracket 6-0, 6-3 to Jackson Takes of Dubuque Wahlert.
Also in Class 1A Red Oak’s Weston Rolenc lost his first match 6-1. 6-3 to Jared McClung of Knoxville and then lost in consolation play 6-0, 6-0 to Ben Albright of Ft. Dodge St. Edmond. Creston O-M’s Ryan Kucera and Desinson’s Matt Moran also dropped their first two matches.
Doubles competitors in 1A also were knocked out on day 1 including Travis Miller and Cody Goeser of St. Albert, Mitch Kinsey and Spencer Pauley of Denison, and Dedrick Kettwick and Austin Smith of Clarinda.
In Class 2A Kyle Crowl of Abraham Lincoln lost out in his first two matches at Veterans Memorial Tennis Center in Cedar Rapids.
The Griswold Boys Golf team sits in 6th place after shooting a 369 team total on day 1 of the Class 1A State Golf Tournament at American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown. James Reynolds led the Tigers with an opening round of 79 and is tied for 21st individually. Tyler Krueger of Riverside was the top area individual after day one with a 78 and is tied for 17th.
In Class 2A Panorama leads the team standings with a team 300 total at Ames Golf and Country Club. Kuemper Catholic is currently in second with a 311. Will Babcock of Panorama is atop the leaderboard after a day 1 round of 70. Teammate Jordan Eng shot a 74 and is currently in 4th place. ST. LOUIS (AP) – John Lackey worked seven scoreless innings and the St. Louis Cardinals got just enough off Mike Bolsinger to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-0 for their fifth straight victory on Friday night.
The Cardinals ended Bolsinger’s streak of 18 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings on Randal Grichuk’s bases-loaded double play ball in the first. Jhonny Peralta doubled twice with an RBI and Grichuk, starting in left field in place of ailing Matt Holliday, batted cleanup for the first time and had an RBI double in the third.
The Dodgers have been shut out four straight times on the road, inclduing getting outscored 10-0 in a three-game sweep at San Francisco May 19-21.
Lackey (3-3) struck out nine and allowed five hits.
Bolsinger (3-1) gave up two runs on seven hits in six innings.
