Hoiberg To Undergo Medical Procedure

Sports

April 10th, 2015 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg announced Friday that he will undergo open heart surgery to replace his aortic valve on Friday, April 17 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

“After my initial surgery to replace my aortic root 10 years ago, I knew that this was something that would need to be done at some point,” Hoiberg said. “My valve has severe regurgitation and the time has come to get it replaced. I am hopeful that this will be my last surgery and I’m looking forward to getting this behind me.”

Hoiberg recently finished his fifth season as Iowa State’s head coach. He has guided the Cyclones to a school-record four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and back-to-back Big 12 Championship titles. Hoiberg owns a 115-56 career record.

Iowa QB Rudock transfers to Michigan and is eligible in 2015

Sports

April 10th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Former Iowa quarterback Jake Rudock is joining Michigan as a graduate transfer and is expected to compete for a starting job this season. Rudock immediately becomes the most experienced quarterback on coach Jim Harbaugh’s roster. Rudock made 25 starts at Iowa and the Hawkeyes were 15-10 in those games. Last season, he passed for 2,436 yards, 16 touchdowns and five interceptions, but he was listed behind C.J. Beathard on the depth chart in January.

Rudock received a waiver from the Big Ten, which normally requires transfers within conference to sit out a season. After Michigan held its spring game on Saturday, Harbaugh said quarterback Shane Morris was the leading candidate to start. Morris served as Devin Gardner’s backup the last two seasons, making two starts.

Iowa hoping Canzeri, Daniels emerge as RBs

Sports

April 9th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s reputation as a running team has been hampered by the fact that the Hawkeyes haven’t run the ball particularly well in recent years. Iowa is hoping to get back to its roots in 2015 behind a senior holdover and a trio of intriguing but inexperienced backs.

Veteran Jordan Canzeri and seldom-used junior LeShun Daniels Jr. are atop the most recent depth chart for Iowa. The Hawkeyes will mark the midway point of spring practice with a workout in West Des Moines on Saturday.

Arrieta, Castro Lead Cubs Over Cardinals 2-0

Sports

April 8th, 2015 by Jim Field

CHICAGO (AP) — Jake Arrieta allowed three hits over seven innings and Starlin Castro had a go-ahead RBI single in a two-run seventh inning, leading the Chicago Cubs over the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 Wednesday for their first win this season.

Arrieta (1-0) struck out seven and walked three. He was 10-5 with a 2.53 ERA in a breakout 2014 and improved to 3-0 with a 0.74 ERA in six career starts against St. Louis.

Phil Coke, Neil Ramirez, Pedro Strop and Hector Rondon combined for hitless relief. Rondon pitched a perfect ninth for his first save this season with the Cubs, who lost 3-0 to St. Louis on Sunday night’s opener.

Lance Lynn (0-1) struck out nine in six-plus innings, allowing both runs — one earned — and two hits. Castro’s single chased him in the seventh, and Miguel Montero hit a sacrifice fly off Kevin Siegrist.
