MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Matt Holliday hit his first home run of the spring, Randal Grichuk added his team-high fifth and the St. Louis Cardinals defeated their Triple-A Memphis affiliate 8-1 Friday night.

Top prospect Marco Gonzales pitched 5 2-3 innings of three-hit ball for the Cardinals. The left-hander will stay down on the farm at Memphis to begin the season as a starter-in-waiting for St. Louis. Gonzales struck out four and gave up just an unearned run in the sixth on a groundout. He also delivered an RBI single before 9,827 fans at AutoZone Park.

Gonzales did issue four walks, including one that loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth. Randy Choate came on to get an inning-ending strikeout. After Redbirds starter Tim Cooney hit Matt Carpenter with a pitch, Holliday launched a drive onto the left-field bluff.

Busch Stadium installs metal detectors at every gate

Sports

April 3rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Busch Stadium has installed walk-through metal detectors at every entry gate in order to comply with Major League Baseball’s new rule that all spectators be scanned before entering any of its 30 stadiums. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the baseball league issued the order after conferring with the Department of Homeland Security.

The new security system has been met with mixed reactions by fans with some saying that it is a disappointing, but necessary measure. Others said that they were surprised the stadium did not have the detectors in place already.  The home of the St. Louis Cardinals previously used hand-held wands to scan a random sample of people entering the stadium.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — All the tuneups are complete for Matt Harvey. Next up is the real thing. Harvey capped a stellar spring training by striking out four in four innings Thursday as the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals played a 0-0 tie in their Grapefruit League finale. Harvey allowed three hits and threw 41 of 56 pitches for strikes. He had a 1.19 ERA in six spring training starts, giving up three runs and 17 hits in 22 2-3 innings.

“Everything feels great, as it has all spring training,” Harvey said. “I don’t think there’s much more to accomplish.” The NL starter in the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field, Harvey hasn’t pitched in a regular-season game since Aug. 24, 2013. The 26-year-old right-hander is recovering from elbow ligament-replacement surgery that Oct. 22. He walked one and struck out 21 during the exhibition season.

UNI’s Jacobson to earn 900K per season

Sports

April 2nd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) – Northern Iowa coach Ben Jacobson will be making roughly $900,000 a year under the terms of a new contract extension. UNI athletic director Troy Dannen announced Thursday that Jacobson has signed a 10-year extension through 2024-25.
Jacobson’s new deal will raise his salary by over $300,000 per season.

Dannen says a number of prominent boosters stepped up in the past two weeks to raise Jacobson’s salary to a level “consistent with the national marketplace.” Jacobson has been Northern Iowa’s coach for nine seasons.  He led the Panthers to a school-record 31 wins and the Missouri Valley tournament title this past season.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State has extended wrestling coach Kevin Jackson’s contract through 2018. Jackson, a 1992 Olympic gold medalist for the U.S., has been with the Cyclones for the past six seasons.

Iowa State went 11-2 in dual meets in 2014-15 and finished with its best winning percentage since 2010. Jackson has coached four national champions at Iowa State, including recent 197-pound winner Kyven Gadson.

The Cyclones say more details regarding Jackson’s new deal will be released at a later date.

Iowa QB Beathard says Hawkeyes are “his team”

Sports

April 2nd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard says the Hawkeyes are “his team” now that former starter Jake Rudock is set to transfer. Beathard spoke to reporters Wednesday for the first time since coach Kirk Ferentz released a depth chart in January with Beathard listed ahead of Rudock, a two-year starter.

Beathard says he didn’t have any plans to leave the Hawkeyes if Rudock had remained the starter. But Beathard added that he felt that he was a better athlete and that he could “do more things” than Rudock during competition ahead of a 45-28 bowl loss to Tennessee.

Beathard took most of the snaps against the Volunteers, and Ferentz announced last week that Rudock intends to play his final season elsewhere.
