CHICAGO (AP) – The Chicago Cubs have selected left-hander Clayton Richard’s contract from Triple-A Iowa in time for Saturday’s start against the Miami Marlins and placed catcher David Ross on the seven-day concussion disabled list.

They also selected catcher Taylor Teagarden’s contract from Iowa and optioned right-hander Donn Roach to Triple-A on Saturday. Infielder Tommy La Stella was transferred to the 60-day disabled list from the 15-day DL, and right-hander Gonzalez Germen was designated for assignment.

Richard, acquired Friday from Pittsburgh for cash, was making his first major league appearance since 2013 with San Diego. He had left shoulder surgery in June that season. The move involving the 38-year-old Ross is retroactive to Thursday. He is batting .189 with four RBIs in 38 games.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Jhonny Peralta broke an eighth-inning tie with a sacrifice fly, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 2-1 Saturday to stop their longest losing streak of the season at four games. Carlos Martinez threw 6 2-3 solid innings, and Seth Maness (3-0) got the win. Trevor Rosenthal closed for his 24th save in 25 opportunities, getting Matt Kemp to ground out with a runner on to end it.

Rosenthal had a 23-game scoreless string halted on Friday. San Diego won the first two games of the series, including a 2-1 victory Friday. All four losses during St. Louis’ skid came at home.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jedd Gyorko homered in the seventh inning to tie the game and then had a run-scoring single in the ninth to lead the San Diego Padres to a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night. San Diego won the first two games of the four-game series after losing three straight.

St. Louis lost a season-high fourth straight home game but the Cardinals are still a major league-best 29-11 at home. Gyorko hit a 3-2 pitch from closer Trevor Rosenthal (1-1) to bring in Yangervis Solarte, who hit a one-out triple. Joaquin Benoit (5-3) picked up the win in relief.

Craig Kimbrel recorded his 21st save in 22 opportunities. He got Jason Heyward to ground into a game-ending double play.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — An Ames native and member of the NBA champion Golden State Warriors is serving as grand marshal for his hometown’s Fourth of July parade. Former Ames High School star Harrison Barnes will be the parade’s grand marshal on Saturday and plans to show off the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy.

The Des Moines Register reports Barnes is the first Iowa high school graduate to win an NBA championship since West Des Moines Valley’s Matt Bullard played for the Houston Rockets in 1994. Barnes helped Ames win state titles in 2009 and 2010. He was picked seventh overall in the 2012 NBA Draft.

Cardinals fire scouting director Correa amid hacking scandal

Sports

July 3rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals say they have fired scouting director Chris Correa. The Cardinals declined to say why, but the team is the subject of an FBI investigation into the hacking of the Houston Astros player personnel database. The Cardinals are also investigating and Correa’s firing is the first known fallout.

Last month, an attorney hired by the team said chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. and general manager John Mozeliak were not targets of the investigation. Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow led the Cardinals’ data-based scouting system before leaving for Houston after the 2011 season. Correa was promoted to director of amateur scouting during the offseason.

Experts: Hacking probe will stretch if Cards execs involved

Sports

July 3rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

HOUSTON (AP) — Legal experts say the federal hacking investigation of the St. Louis Cardinals could take longer if high-level executives are implicated in the breach of the Houston Astros’ database. No charges have been filed in the ongoing probe, which legal experts believe is several months old and has likely involved scouring Astros servers for any IP addresses that might lead back to the Cardinals organization.

Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. has blamed the alleged hack on “roguish behavior” by a handful of individuals. An attorney for the team has said high-level executives were not involved in the scandal. Former federal prosecutor Philip Hilder says if any “higher-ups” are implicated, that would require corroboration and extend the investigation’s duration.

If it’s just low-level employees, it could wrap up quickly.
