WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Jarrod Uthoff scored 25 points, Peter Jok had 11 points and nine rebounds and Iowa erased a 17-point halftime deficit in a 70-63 upset victory over No. 14 Purdue on Saturday night. The Hawkeyes (11-3, 2-0 Big Ten) have won four straight and eight of nine, including two upsets of Top 15 teams this week. They beat No. 1 Michigan State on Tuesday night.
Kendall Stephens led Purdue (13-2, 1-1) with 12 points, and A.J. Hammons had 11. The Boilermakers had won 15 straight at hole. Purdue completely dominated the first half, using seven 3-pointers to build a 37-20 lead. But the Boilermakers collapsed in the second half.
Iowa used a 13-0 spurt to finally take the lead, 48-46 lead with 7:30 to go. And after Purdue tied it for the final time, at 48, Iowa scored five straight.
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Buddy Hield scored 22 points and No. 3 Oklahoma beat No. 11 Iowa State 87-83 on Saturday night to match the second-best start in school history at 12-0. Ryan Spangler had 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Isaiah Cousins scored all 15 of his points in the second half for the Sooners in the Big 12 opener for both teams.
Oklahoma plays at No. 2 Kansas on Monday in what could be a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown after No. 1 Michigan State lost to Iowa on Tuesday night. Oklahoma, the nation’s top 3-point shooting team, made only 3 of 16 3s in the first half, but was 8 of 13 in the second.
Georges Niang scored 29 points, and Deonte Burton had 14 of his 19 points in the second half for Iowa State (11-2).
CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — Anthony Beane made six 3-pointers and matched a career-best with 32 points, and Southern Illinois held off Northern Iowa’s late rally for a 75-73 victory on Saturday night. Beane made a 3-pointer and Southern Illinois led 70-59 with 1:35 remaining. Klint Carlson, Matt Bohannon and Paul Jesperson each made 3-pointers as part of a 13-3 run that pulled Northern Iowa to 73-72 with 12 seconds to play.
Beane dunked with three seconds left, sealing the fifth-straight win for Southern Illinois (13-2, 2-0 Missouri Valley). The Salukis led 39-30 before Northern Iowa used a 16-11 spurt to pull to 50-46 with 12 minutes to go. Beane answered with two 3s and Sean O’Brien added four points to stretch Southern Illinois’ lead to 60-48.
The Panthers cut the deficit to six points with 4:28 remaining. Carlson sparked the rally at the 1:10-mark. Wes Washpun led Northern Iowa (9-6, 1-1) with 19 points.

Lopsided games and having the College Football Playoff semifinals on New Year’s Eve led to a 13 percent drop in TV ratings for the New Year’s Six Bowls from last year. The Rose Bowl on Friday drew its lowest rating (7.9) since it became part of the BCS in 1999. The overnight ratings for the big New Year’s Day bowls were announced Saturday by ESPN, which broadcasts all the games.
All three of Friday’s major bowls were blowouts. The Fiesta between Ohio State and Notre Dame, earned a 6.2 rating. That was up 35 percent from last season’s Arizona-Boise State game. The Buckeyes won 44-28. Stanford beat Iowa 45-16 in the Rose Bowl. The Sugar Bowl, which Mississippi won 48-20 against Oklahoma State, drew a 5.3 rating.
Two men from eastern Iowa plan to complete a remarkable feat in the New Year. Dennis Lee of Walford and Daren Schumaker of Cedar Rapids are running marathons in all 99 Iowa counties. They spoke with KCRG-TV during their recent 26.2 mile long run through Cerro Gordo County. “The best run…my favorite was Chickasaw County, maybe partly because I’m from there,” Lee said. Schumaker added, “The worst run was in Taylor County. It was raining that day and it was probably 38 degrees.”
Their journey began in 2009. 
They have about a dozen more counties left and Lee said they’ve scheduled Delaware County for their final marathon in mid-September. “It’s almost a bitter-sweet thing because we’ve done so many and had a lot of fun, but we’re looking forward to the end,” Lee told KCRG. The two men conceived the idea many years ago as a way to raise money for the American Heart Association.

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Stanford barely missed out on the College Football Playoff, and Christian McCaffrey almost won the Heisman Trophy. McCaffrey and the mighty Cardinal didn’t miss a thing in their Rose Bowl romp over Iowa.
McCaffrey caught a 75-yard touchdown pass on the opening snap and returned a punt 66 yards for another score while setting the Rose Bowl record with 368 all-purpose yards, propelling No. 5 Stanford to a 45-16 victory over the sixth-ranked Hawkeyes on Friday.
Kevin Hogan passed for 223 yards and three TDs in his final game for the Cardinal (12-2), who won the Rose Bowl for the second time in three trips over the past four years for this unlikely football powerhouse. McCaffrey was sublime in his debut at the Granddaddy of Them All, breaking the all-purpose yards record set by Wisconsin’s Jared Abbrederis in 2012.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs pass rusher Justin Houston returned to practice for the first time in more than a month on Friday and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders. Fellow linebacker Tamba Hali is also questionable after missing a game with a broken thumb.
Houston has not played since hyperextending his knee against Buffalo on Nov. 29. The Chiefs have considered him day to day ever since, though he has not participated in any workouts.
Even if Houston or Hali does not play Sunday, the fact that they are questionable increases the likelihood they’ll be available for the playoffs. Kansas City (10-5) has already secured a wild-card spot and could still win the AFC West.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa’s head football coach remains atop the list of the state’s highest-paid employees. Database information provided by the state shows Kirk Ferentz made almost $4 million in the fiscal year ending June 30. The Des Moines Register reports that Iowa State head basketball coach Fred Hoiberg made $2.1 million over the same period. He’s since departed for professional basketball’s Chicago Bulls.
In third place on the list is Iowa State football coach Paul Rhoads at $1.85 million. He was fired in November. The highest-paid person on the list who isn’t a coach is Kenneth Kates, chief executive officer of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He was paid more than $1.6 million in fiscal 2015.
