CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Nathan Knuffman kicked a field goal and David Griffith made a game-clinching interception, all in the final 3:18, as Western Illinois defeated Northern Iowa 24-19 on Saturday. The Leathernecks (4-2, 3-0 Missouri Valley Conference) led all the way, taking a 7-0 first-quarter lead when Aaron Diggs snagged an interception and ran 95 yards to score. Knuffman’s final field goal was from 23 yards.

Northern Iowa (2-4, 0-3) rallied with a pair of TDs after halftime — Deiondre’ Hall scoring on a 32-yard interception return, and Aaron Bailey punching across from the 5. Bailey’s TD pulled the Panthers to 21-19 after a two-point conversion pass failed with 6:35 remaining. Hall’s second pick this season makes four career interceptions, breaking the school record.

Trenton Norvell completed 25 of 36 passes for 263 yards. Nikko Watson gained 115 yards on 35 carries.

UNI’s Sawyer Kollmorgen and Aaron Bailey were each intercepted once and combined for 170 yards passing.

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Reserve running back Akrum Wadley ran for 192 yards and tied a school record with four rushing touchdowns to carry No. 17 Iowa over No. 20 Northwestern 40-10 on Saturday.

With leading rusher Jordan Canzeri sidelined in the first quarter with an ankle injury, Wadley took over for Iowa (7-0, 3-0 Big Ten). The injury occurred following a short run when Northwestern linebacker Jaylen Prater landed on Canzeri, folding his ankle under a pile of players.

Wadley, who had only eight carries coming into the game, scored his third touchdown on a 2-yard run with 6:42 remaining in the third quarter, extending Iowa’s lead to 23-10. His record-tying fourth scoring run, which followed a Northwestern fumble on the Wildcats ensuing drive, came on a 4-yard run that.

Northwestern (5-2, 1-2) turned the ball over three times as the Wildcats lost for the second straight week after five consecutive victories.

Iowa State hosts #3 TCU Saturday

Sports

October 17th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa State Cyclones host third ranked TCU this evening. The Cyclones are coming off a lopsided loss at Texas Tech. ISU coach Paul Rhoads says the Cyclones must do a better job of dealing with TCU’s speed on offense. The TCU offense is led by one of nation’s top players in quarterback Trevone Boykin.

Kickoff in Ames is 6:00p.m. and the game will be televised by ESPN2.

#17 Iowa visits #20 Northwestern today (Saturday)

Sports

October 17th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

The 17th ranked Iowa Hawkeyes put their unbeaten record on the line with a visit to 20th ranked Northwestern, today. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz expects a hard fought, close game that is nothing like Iowa’s 48-7 win last season. This has been a competitive series since the mid-90s when Gary Barnett turned the Northwestern program around.

Led by Justin Jackson’s 110 yards per game the team from Northwestern likes to keep the ball on the ground. Pre-game coverage begins at 9-a.m. on KJAN. Kickoff in Evanston, IL, is at 11:00a.m. The game will also be televised by ABC.

Shorter shot clock won’t affect Hawkeyes

Sports

October 16th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery told the Big Ten basketball media day gathering in Chicago that a shorter shot clock will not change the way his Hawkeyes play offense but it may change the way some teams play defense. The college shot clock is moving from 35 to 30 seconds beginning this season and McCaffery says more teams may use full court pressure as a result.

Mccaffery says the Hawkeyes won’t look for quicker shots with the 30 second clock. The Hawkeyes debut with an exhibition game against the University of Sioux Falls on October 29th.
