Iowa signs wrestling coach Tom Brands through 2020

Sports

October 1st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa wrestling coach Tom Brands has signed a three-year contract extension through 2019-20. Brands, who won gold at the 1996 Olympic Games, has been at Iowa for nine seasons, winning four Big Ten titles and three NCAA crowns.

The Hawkeyes say Brands was also instrumental in bringing the U.S. Olympic Team Trials to Iowa City in 2012. The event was so popular that the U.S. will return to Iowa City for the trials in 2016. The deal was announced Thursday.

Atlantic faces another tough district test at Dallas Center-Grimes

Sports

The Atlantic Trojan Football team suffered big loss in week 5 to a tough Harlan squad and lost a couple more players to injury along the way.  The road doesn’t get any easier in week 6 as the Trojans travel to 5th ranked Dallas Center-Grimes.

The Mustangs sport a 4-1 record with their only loss coming in week 2 to top ranked Pella.  The Mustang offense is led by Senior Quarterback Austin Kloewer who has thrown 771 yards and 9 Touchdowns on the season and also rolled up 331 yards rushing and 2 more scores.  Dallas Center-Grimes Head Coach Scott Heitland says that Kloewer is the best athlete on the team and is a big part of their offense.  Kloewer may be the star but Coach Heitland also believes the Mustangs have a large number of players that are capable of impacting the game.

Atlantic Head Coach Eric Waldstein says his team knows that they need to slow down Kloewer in order to have a chance to compete.  On the other side of the ball Waldstein is preparing his team for a multitude of defensive looks from the Mustangs and says their versatility will make it difficult from a play calling standpoint.

We will have coverage of the game on KJAN.  Chris Parks and Seth Christensen will bring you the action with Pregame at 6:30pm and Kickoff at 7:00pm.  Our football night starts with our weekly high school pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00pm.  Listen in on AM1220, FM101.1, on the web, or on the KJAN mobile app.  You can also watch the live video stream on KJANTV.

Cardinals rout Pirates, clinch 3rd straight NL Central title

Sports

September 30th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals are back in a familiar spot: on top of the NL Central looking down at everyone else. Jason Heyward’s third-inning grand slam powered the Cardinals over the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-1 in the second game of a doubleheader on Wednesday night, giving St. Louis its third straight division title and 11th since 1994.

This one may be among the most impressive. The Cardinals and assured themselves of the best record in the majors this season despite losing several stars to injury for long stretches. Heyward’s shot off Bobby LaFromboise, who replaced an ineffective Charlie Morton (9-9), gave St. Louis an early six-run lead. Tyler Lyons (3-1) had little trouble making it hold up as the Cardinals reached the 100-win plateau for the ninth time.

Chiefs get Sean Smith back, lose Phillip Gaines to torn ACL

Sports

September 30th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs got Sean Smith back from his three-game suspension on Wednesday, the same day they found out that fellow cornerback Phillip Gaines will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL. Smith was suspended for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy after getting arrested last year for drunken driving. That is normally a two-game suspension for first-time offenders, but Smith was given an extra game for crashing into a light post.

His return couldn’t come at a better time. Gaines had been playing in his place until Monday night in Green Bay, when he tore his ACL while defending a pass in the end zone. The Chiefs struggled to stop Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ passing offense after he left the game, losing 38-28.

Kansas City visits Cincinnati on Sunday.

Pirates top Cardinals 8-2 in Game 1 of doubleheader

Sports

September 30th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Francisco Cervelli hit his second career grand slam, Gerrit Cole pitched seven solid innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-2 in a doubleheader opener to put St. Louis’ NL Central title hopes on hold. The Cardinals’ magic number remained at two for their third straight division championship after the Pirates jumped on Michael Wacha (17-7).

Cervelli delivered the big blow, a shot to left field with the bases loaded in the fourth. Neil Walker also homered for the Pirates, who moved within three games of St. Louis for first and inched closer to homefield advantage in next week’s wild-card game.

Cole (19-8) allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innings in likely his final regular-season start.

Prosecutor: Man held in shooting of fan after Cardinals game

Sports

September 30th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Prosecutors say a man is being held in connection to a shooting and robbery after a St. Louis Cardinals game that may have left an Army veteran paralyzed. Susan Ryan of the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s office said Wednesday that the person of interest is being held on an unrelated charge in St. Louis County while St. Louis police investigate the shooting.

Forty-three-year-old Christopher Sanna and his girlfriend had just left the Cardinals game Friday night and were in a parking lot a few blocks from Busch Stadium when two men demanded the couple’s belongings. The woman gave up her purse and the couple turned to run when one of the gunmen shot Sanna in the back. Sanna’s mother says doctors told the family her son probably won’t walk again.

Cardinals activate Wainwright from DL

Sports

September 30th, 2015 by admin

PITTSBURGH, Pa., – The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to today’s double-header against the Pittsburgh Pirates that they have activated right-handed pitcher Adam Wainwright from the 60-day disabled list and placed right-handed pitcher Carlos Martinez (right shoulder strain) on the 60-day disabled list.

Wainwright, 34, who suffered a left Achilles injury on April 25, has missed 141 games since injuring himself while batting in a game at Milwaukee.  Prior to the injury, he was 2-1 with a 1.44 ERA (25.0 IP) in four starts.

The team plans to use Wainwright out of the bullpen.  He last pitched in relief during the 2006 season when he was on the mound to close out both the World Series and National League Championship Series.   He has made 221 consecutive appearances as a starter since that time.

The two-time 20-game winner and three-time All-Star owns a career mark of 121-67 with a 2.90 ERA.
