Big 12 teams will have to play non-conference vs. Power 5

Sports

December 8th, 2015 by admin

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Big 12 football teams will now be required to play at least one non-conference game against a team from one of the other Power Five leagues.

The Big 12 announced Tuesday that teams will have to annually play against a team from the ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12 or SEC, or Notre Dame.

Commissioner Bob Bowlsby says the move will strengthen the resumes for all 10 of the Big 12 teams. Schedule strength is a key component in College Football Playoff selections.

No. 4 Oklahoma is in the four-team playoff this season. But Baylor and TCU were both left out of the first playoff last year when both went 11-1 and shared the Big 12 title.

The new requirement doesn’t affect existing non-conference game contracts, including next season’s games.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired infielder Jedd Gyorko and cash from the San Diego Padres for outfielder Jon Jay.

The 27-year-old Gyorko hit .247 with 16 homers and 57 RBIs this year, spending time at second base, shortstop and first base. He has a .236 average in three big league seasons with 49 homers and 171 RBIs.

Under a deal Gyorko signed in April 2014, he is guaranteed $4 million next season, $6 million in 2017, $9 million in 2018 and $13 million in 2019. The contract includes a $13 million club option for 2020 with a $1 million buyout.

Jay, 30, helped the Cardinals win the 2011 World Series title but hit .210 last season, his lowest average in six big league seasons and down from .303 in 2014. He has a .287 career average.

Jay has a $6,225,000 salary next season, then can become a free agent.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Jarrod Uthoff scored a career-high 27 points and Iowa beat Western Illinois 90-56 on Monday for its fourth consecutive win.  Uthoff grabbed nine rebounds and was 10 of 16 from the floor, helping the Hawkeyes (7-2) shoot 50 percent (33 of 66) from the field. Dom Uhl scored 15 points and Adam Woodbury added 10.

Iowa got on top of the Leathernecks early on and never looked back, controlling the pace of play and asserting themselves physically all night.  Garrett Covington had 12 points to lead Western Illinois (6-2), which had no answer for Iowa’s fast-paced offense.

The win moves Iowa to a perfect 5-0 on its home court this season. It came on the back of an aggressive night from Iowa’s shooters, who knocked down 10 of 23 from beyond the arc. The Hawkeyes also outrebounded Western Illinois 45-35 and had 10 steals.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — More than 40,000 people are expected to descend upon Lawrence in July 2017 after the city was selected to host the USA Track & Field Junior Olympic Championships. The city beat out Des Moines, Iowa, to host the event. The Lawrence Journal-World reports the nation’s top track and field athletes between the ages of 7 and 18 will compete at Rock Chalk Park in northwest Lawrence.

Organizers say about 9,500 athletes and 33,000 family members, coaches and spectators are expected to attend the championships. Lawrence will have about 1,400 hotel rooms by 2017, far short of what is needed. The city’s visitor’s bureau is working to arrange rooms in Topeka, Overland Park, Olathe and Kansas City during the championships, which will run July 23 through July 30, 2017.

UNDATED (AP) — Michigan State is No. 1 in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll for the first time since early in the 2013-14 season. The Spartans (9-0) jumped from third to a runaway first following last week’s losses by then-Nos. 1 and 2 Kentucky and Maryland. Kansas (6-1), which had one first-place vote, moved from fourth to second, while North Carolina, the preseason No. 1, jumped from ninth to third and received two votes for No. 1. Iowa State moved up one spot to fourth and was followed by Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, Duke, Villanova and Virginia.

Butler, at No. 18, and Utah, at No. 25, are the week’s newcomers, both having been ranked earlier this season. They replace Syracuse, which was No. 14, and Texas A&M, which was 18th.
