Royals win World Series after another late rally

Sports

November 2nd, 2015 by admin

NEW YORK (AP) — The resilient and relentless Kansas City Royals are World Series champions for the first time in 30 years — thanks to Christian Colon. His pinch-hit RBI tiebreaking single keyed a five-run rally in the top of the 12th inning in the Royals come-from-behind 7-2 victory over the New York Mets to win the World Series in five games.

World Series MVP Salvador Perez opened the 12th inning rally with an opposite field single. Pinch-runner Jarrod Dyson stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Colon — making his first plate appearance in the playoffs — delivered a run-scoring single off Mets reliever Addison Reed. Alcides Escobar scored Colon on a double. The Royals then added three more for insurance.

The lightly used Colon is the first player in World Series history to drive in the winning run in a clinching victory in his first plate appearance.

The Royals won all four World Series games coming from behind. After taking the first two at home, the Royals won two of three in New York. In a year of improbable comebacks — they won eight postseason games coming from behind — this was one of the most unlikely of all.

Kansas City trailed 2-0 after Mets right-hander Matt Harvey hurled eight powerful innings, striking out nine. After he gave up a run in the ninth, Harvey gave way to Jeurys  Familia. The Mets closer allowed the tying run to score on a gutsy baserunning move by Eric Hosmer, who scored from third on a ground out. It was Familia’s third blown save of the series.

That opened the door for the Royals’ extra inning heroics — and their second World Series title in history. The Royals avenged their seven-game loss to San Francisco in last year’s Series.

LONDON (AP) — Alex Smith threw for 145 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 78 yards and a touchdown to lead the Kansas City Chiefs over the Detroit Lions 45-10 Sunday at Wembley Stadium. Smith scrambled his way through the Detroit defense for some big plays, including a career-high 49-yard run in the second quarter that set up his 12-yard touchdown run.

The Chiefs (3-5) were playing at Wembley for the first time, while the Lions (1-7) played in London for the second straight season. De’Anthony Thomas, Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware also rushed for touchdowns for the Chiefs. Thomas ended up with 100 total yards, while West ran for 97. Travis Kelce and Jeremy Maclin caught TD passes in the second half.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have a three-games-to-one lead in the World Series after rallying for three runs in the eighth inning to beat the Mets 5-3 in New York. Daniel Murphy’s error at second base brought home the tying run before Mike Moustakas and Salvador Perez followed with RBI singles. Rookie Michael Conforto hit a pair of solo homers, including a fifth-inning blast that put the Mets ahead 3-1.

NEW YORK (AP) — Edinson Volquez has rejoined the Kansas City Royals following his father’s death. The right-hander remains scheduled to start Sunday night in Game 5 of the World Series against the New York Mets, pending a conversation with manager Ned Yost. Volquez is 1-2 with a 4.37 ERA in four starts this postseason.

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — The best finish on Saturday’s top-25 schedule occurred at Duke as Corn Elder took Miami’s eighth lateral of a wild final kickoff return and brought it back 75 yards for a touchdown to give the Hurricanes a 30-27 victory over No. 22 Blue Devils. Thomas Sirk seemingly had given the Blue Devils the win by scoring on a sneak with 6 seconds left. But in a final sequence reminiscent of California’s unforgettable run through the Stanford band, Elder caught the last of eight laterals, and zigged and zagged through the Duke coverage team for the score.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — No 3 Clemson was the highest-ranked team in action on Saturday, and Deshaun Watson accounted for six touchdowns to help the Blue Devils pull away in a 56-41 win over the Wolfpack. Watson threw for 383 yards and five scores, and also ran for 54 yards and a touchdown as the Tigers improved to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the ACC. Wayne Gallman ran for 172 yards and a touchdown for the Tigers, who gained 623 total yards and pulled away after leading just 16-13 in the second quarter.

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — Conrad Ukropina kicked a 19-yard field goal with 1:54 left to lift No. 8 Stanford to a 30-28 win over Washington State on Saturday night. Washington State kicker Erik Powell hooked a 43-yard field goal attempt wide right as time expired to give Stanford its seventh consecutive victory. Powell tied a school record with five field goals in the game despite rainy, windy conditions.Quarterback Kevin Hogan ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns for Stanford (7-1, 6-0 Pac-12), which is the only undefeated team in Pac-12 play. Washington State (5-3, 3-2) had a three-game winning streak snapped. The Cougars haven’t beaten a Top 10 team since topping No. 5 Texas in the 2003 Holiday Bowl.

UNDATED (AP) — Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett has been suspended for the top-ranked Buckeyes’ next game after being cited with a misdemeanor offense of operating a vehicle under the influence. Ohio State says in a statement Barrett was stopped at a Columbus police check point early Saturday morning. The 8-0 Buckeyes are off this weekend and play at home against Minnesota next Saturday.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The defending NBA champions are off to a 3-0 start after Stephen Curry poured in 53 points to lead Golden State past New Orleans 134-120. Curry outscored the entire Pelicans team 28-26 in the third quarter. He also shot 8 for 14 from 3-point range and finished with nine assists and four steals.

Lanning leads Iowa State past Texas 24-0 in first start

Sports

October 31st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Joel Lanning threw a touchdown pass in his first start and freshman Mike Warren carved out another 100-yard rushing game, leading Iowa State to a much-needed 24-0 victory over Texas on Saturday night. Lanning, a sophomore who replaced senior Sam Richardson, struggled at times with his passing but did enough with his feet for the Cyclones (3-5, 2-3 Big 12) to break a three-game losing streak.

He led a 66-yard scoring drive that gave the Cyclones a quick early lead and floated a perfectly thrown pass to Dondre Daley in the left corner of the end zone to make it 17-0 in the third quarter. Texas (3-5, 2-3) had upset Oklahoma and dominated Kansas State in its two previous outings with an improved running game. But the Longhorns struggled to get anything going in this one and never advanced past the Iowa State 47 until the final 90 seconds.

No. 10 Iowa holds off Maryland 31-15

Sports

October 31st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Desmond King had an 88-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and 10th-ranked Iowa beat Maryland 31-15 Saturday for its eighth straight victory to start the season. Akrum Wadley, LeShun Daniels and Derrick Mitchell had touchdown runs for the Hawkeyes (8-0, 4-0). They’ll enter November unbeaten for just the second time in 17 seasons under coach Kirk Ferentz.

Iowa used a touchdown late in the second quarter to lead 21-0 at halftime. The Hawkeyes defense took over from there, and King’s return put the Hawkeyes ahead 31-7 with 7:38 left. Will Likely had a 100-yard kickoff return for the Terrapins (2-6, 0-4), who threw for just 74 yards.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) – Aaron Bailey threw a touchdown pass and ran for another to lead Northern Iowa to a 20-7 victory over South Dakota on Saturday. Bailey was 16-of-27 passing for 231 yards with 44 yards rushing to lead the Panthers (4-4, 2-3 Missouri Valley), who have won consecutive games since snapping a three-game losing skid.

Ryan Saeger was 11-of-21 for 133 yards passing with a first quarter touchdown to lead South Dakota (4-4, 2-3).  Bailey threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Braden Lehman, and bullied in for a 1-yard TD run to cap an eight play, 83-yard drive to give the Panthers a 14-7 halftime lead. Michael Schmadeke kicked field goals of 48 and 50 yards in the third quarter to cap the scoring. The Coyotes had just 187 yards of offense with two fumbles and an interception.
