No. 10 Iowa’s depth at running back coming in handy

Sports

November 3rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa used to be so thin at running back that it used a fullback there for three years. The surging Hawkeyes enter November with four backs they can count on. The emergence of sophomores Akrum Wadley and Derrick Mitchell, combined with the recent return of opening day starter LeShun Daniels, has left No. 10 Iowa (8-0, 4-0 Big Ten) loaded at running back.

Iowa is so set that they can take their time with leading rusher Jordan Canzeri, who’s expected back soon following an ankle sprain. The run-first Hawkeyes should have at least three backs get multiple carries Saturday when it faces Indiana (4-4, 0-4).

Board permanently revokes license of a former Treynor Teacher/Coach

News, Sports

November 3rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

A former Treynor teacher and coach accused of sexual abuse will never teach again in Iowa. According to the Daily NonPareil, the Board of Educational Examiners issued a permanent revocation of 46-year old Michael Travis’ teaching license last month after Travis pleaded guilty Aug. 18th to simple assault, a misdemeanor, and agreed to surrender his license to the state.

Travis did not have to register as a sex offender and did not serve any jail time. He received a deferred judgement, and he continued to maintain his innocence in a statement. He had been a teacher at Treynor Elementary School and an assistant softball coach at Treynor High School at the time of his arrest in May 2014.

A prosecutor with the Pottawattamie County Attorney’s Office said the alleged victims – three former softball players and a fifth-grader, with alleged incidents from 2002 through 2006 – were involved in the plea deal and wanted to make sure Travis wouldn’t remain a teacher. The Board of Educational Examiners voted Oct. 9th to revoke his license as well as endorsements as a K-12 athletic coach, K-6 elementary classroom teacher and K-8 physical education teacher. He also held an expired substitute license.

The revocation carries no possibility of reinstatement.

Cardinals exercise option on Garcia

Sports

November 2nd, 2015 by admin

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have exercised their 2016 club option on left-handed pitcher Jaime Garcia and declined their 2016 club option on right-handed pitcher Jonathan Broxton.  The team also announced today that infielder Pete Kozma and catchers Ed Easley and Travis Tartamella have been outrighted off the team’s 40-man Major League roster.

Garcia, 29, was 10-6 with a 2.43 ERA in his 20 starts in 2015, going 7-2 from August 1 until season’s end.  The Cardinals were 10-2 in his 12 games started during that span.

Garcia has posted a 52-32 career mark with a 3.31 ERA in 126 career games pitched and his 3.25 ERA since 2010, when he finished 3rd in National League Rookie of the Year voting, is 7th best amongst all Major League lefties.

Broxton, 31, was 3-3 with a 2.66 ERA in 26 games pitched for the Cardinals following his acquisition on July 31 in a trade with Milwaukee.

Kozma, 27, appeared in 76 games for the Cardinals this past season while Easley, 29, and Tartamella, 27, both made their Major League debuts during the 2015 campaign.

N.C. preseason AP No. 1 for record 9th time; ISU 7th

Sports

November 2nd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

North Carolina, which returns four starters and nine of its 10 top scorers from the team that reached the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament, is No. 1 in The Associated Press’ preseason Top 25 for a record ninth time.

The Tar Heels received 35 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel. Kentucky is ranked second with 10 No. 1 votes, followed by Maryland, which had 14 first-place votes, and Kansas, which was No. 1 on five ballots. Defending national champion Duke is fifth with Virginia, which got one first-place vote, sixth followed by Iowa State, Oklahoma, Gonzaga and Wichita State.

North Carolina was last a preseason No. 1 in 2011-12. They broke a tie for most preseason No. 1 rankings with UCLA.

Iowa State finds identity through run game

Sports

November 2nd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State’s offense never found a consistent identity under Mark Mangino. Five days after Mangino’s departure as offensive coordinator, the Cyclones discovered a personality that could work for them. It’s anchored by their surging running game.

Iowa State ran 54 times last weekend against Texas, one shy of its season high. The result was a 24-0 win that snapped a three-game losing skid and restored some confidence to a program that appeared to be teetering on the verge of collapse.

Underwood looks to stay unbeaten against Hinton in second round

Sports

November 2nd, 2015 by admin

The Underwood Eagles have powered their way to a 10-0 record on the season and hope to continue that success in the second round of the playoffs.  The Eagles (10-0) will host a tough Hinton Blackhawks (9-1) squad tonight.

The Eagles defeated the I-35 Roadrunners 34-6 in their opening playoff game and got another great performance from their Senior leader at Quarterback Nick Pedersen.  Pedersen was 13-18 passing for 215 yards 2 touchdowns and 1 interception in the win. He also ran 8 times for 71 yards and a touchdown.  The Eagles also had nice performances from Senior Running Back Nick Pedersen and Junior Wide Receiver/Back Isaiah Humphrey.  Head Coach Nate Mechaelsen knows how valuable Pedersen is to the team and knows he has a well seasoned team that keeps improving.

The Hinton Blackhawks opened up their postseason with a 59-20 win over Emmetsburg and also had a great performance from their Quarterback Jay Small.  He was 9-15 passing for 166 yards and 3 Touchdowns. Senior Wingback Skyler Beller also had a big night against the E-Hawks with a 131 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns.  Hinton Co-Head Coach Steve Diediker sees a lot of similarities between his club and Underwood and he knows they will need another strong performance to try to move on.

Both coaches are well aware of the offensive efficiency their opponents have had and it may very well come down to who can make a few key defensive stops to earn a victory.  We’ll have coverage of the game tonight on KJAN AM 1220 and FM 101.1.  Join Chris Parks and Seth Christensen for the game with pregame at 6:00pm and Kickoff at 7:00pm.  You can also listen to the game online at kjan.com or on the free KJAN mobile app available in the google play store for android devices or the app store for iphone users.
