Vikings hold on for ugly 16-10 win vs Chiefs

Sports

October 18th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Minnesota’s defense and rookie wide receiver Stefon Diggs bailed out Teddy Bridgewater for an erratic performance, and the Vikings held on to beat the mistake-prone Kansas City Chiefs 16-10 on Sunday. Alex Smith’s 42-yard touchdown pass to Albert Wilson midway through the fourth quarter pulled the Chiefs within three points, but the Vikings (3-2) played well enough early to survive their ragged finish.

Charcandrick West, one of their replacements for the injured Chiefs star Jamaal Charles, lost a fumble down the stretch. The Chiefs (1-5) had eight penalties enforced for 95 yards. Diggs had 129 yards on seven catches on a day when Bridgewater threw two interceptions. Adrian Peterson, who was on the sideline late in the game with the Vikings trying to put it away, finished with 60 yards on 26 carries.

October 18th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Anthony Lawrence passed for a career-high 326 yards and two touchdowns, and Jereke Armstrong scored three touchdowns to help San Diego beat Drake 27-0 Saturday. Armstrong caught two passes — both for touchdowns — for 78 yards and scored on a 24-yard run. Blake Martin added 13 carries for 63 yards and a score in San Diego.

Lawrence hit Armstrong for a 16-yard score on the final play of the first quarter and Martin’s 21-yard touchdown with 52 seconds left in the second gave San Diego (4-2, 3-1 Pioneer League) a 14-0 lead at the half. Armstrong scored on a 62-yard catch-and-run late in the third before his touchdown run capped the scoring with 3:24 to play.

Drake (3-4, 2-2) was limited to 61 yards rushing and was held scoreless for the second time this season.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Trevone Boykin threw for 436 yards and four touchdowns and third-ranked TCU rolled past Iowa State 45-21 Saturday for its third road win in four weeks. Josh Doctson had 190 yards receiving and two TDs for the Horned Frogs (7-0, 4-0 Big 12), who went on a 31-0 run after the first quarter.

Boykin’s 3-yard TD run with 14:36 left put TCU ahead 38-21. Doctson made it a rout with a 42-yard touchdown catch six minutes later. Sam Richardson had 251 yards passing for Iowa State (2-4, 1-2).

Field goal, interception lift W. Illinois over N. Iowa 24-19

Sports

October 17th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Nathan Knuffman kicked a field goal and David Griffith made a game-clinching interception, all in the final 3:18, as Western Illinois defeated Northern Iowa 24-19 on Saturday. The Leathernecks (4-2, 3-0 Missouri Valley Conference) led all the way, taking a 7-0 first-quarter lead when Aaron Diggs snagged an interception and ran 95 yards to score. Knuffman’s final field goal was from 23 yards.

Northern Iowa (2-4, 0-3) rallied with a pair of TDs after halftime — Deiondre’ Hall scoring on a 32-yard interception return, and Aaron Bailey punching across from the 5. Bailey’s TD pulled the Panthers to 21-19 after a two-point conversion pass failed with 6:35 remaining. Hall’s second pick this season makes four career interceptions, breaking the school record.

Trenton Norvell completed 25 of 36 passes for 263 yards. Nikko Watson gained 115 yards on 35 carries.

UNI’s Sawyer Kollmorgen and Aaron Bailey were each intercepted once and combined for 170 yards passing.

Wadley has 4 TDs, No. 17 Iowa tops No. 20 Northwestern 40-10

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Reserve running back Akrum Wadley ran for 192 yards and tied a school record with four rushing touchdowns to carry No. 17 Iowa over No. 20 Northwestern 40-10 on Saturday.

With leading rusher Jordan Canzeri sidelined in the first quarter with an ankle injury, Wadley took over for Iowa (7-0, 3-0 Big Ten). The injury occurred following a short run when Northwestern linebacker Jaylen Prater landed on Canzeri, folding his ankle under a pile of players.

Wadley, who had only eight carries coming into the game, scored his third touchdown on a 2-yard run with 6:42 remaining in the third quarter, extending Iowa’s lead to 23-10. His record-tying fourth scoring run, which followed a Northwestern fumble on the Wildcats ensuing drive, came on a 4-yard run that.

Northwestern (5-2, 1-2) turned the ball over three times as the Wildcats lost for the second straight week after five consecutive victories.

Iowa State hosts #3 TCU Saturday

Sports

October 17th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa State Cyclones host third ranked TCU this evening. The Cyclones are coming off a lopsided loss at Texas Tech. ISU coach Paul Rhoads says the Cyclones must do a better job of dealing with TCU’s speed on offense. The TCU offense is led by one of nation’s top players in quarterback Trevone Boykin.

Kickoff in Ames is 6:00p.m. and the game will be televised by ESPN2.
