Former big leaguer Adron Chambers suspended 50 games

Sports

November 3rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

NEW YORK (AP) — Former big league outfielder Adron Chambers, currently in the Chicago Cubs’ farm system, has been suspended 50 games under baseball’s minor league drug program following a second positive test for a drug of abuse. Atlanta pitcher Steve Borkowski has been suspended for 68 games and San Francisco pitcher Alvaro Diaz for 25 games, the commissioner’s office said Tuesday.

Borkowski tested positive for a metabolite of Stanozolol. The reason for Diaz’s violation was not announced, but the only specified 25-game penalty in the minor league program is for unauthorized use or possession of a syringe.

Chambers, 29, is on the roster of the Triple-A Iowa Cubs. He played for St. Louis from 2011-13 and hit .216 with nine RBIs in 84 big league games and 99 plate appearances with the Cardinals.

Chambers began 2014 in Houston’s minor league system and was traded to Toronto. He spent this year at Triple-A Iowa, where he hit .280 with one homer, 30 RBIs and nine steals.

Borkowski, who turns 23 Saturday, was 3-1 with a 9.00 ERA over 10 games and 20 innings this season with Danville of the rookie level Appalachian League. Diaz, 22, was 0-1 with a 7.24 ERA in 14 relief appearances this year for the rookie-level Arizona League Giants.

There have been 92 suspensions this year under the minor league program, including 34 for drugs of abuse.

No. 10 Iowa’s depth at running back coming in handy

Sports

November 3rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa used to be so thin at running back that it used a fullback there for three years. The surging Hawkeyes enter November with four backs they can count on. The emergence of sophomores Akrum Wadley and Derrick Mitchell, combined with the recent return of opening day starter LeShun Daniels, has left No. 10 Iowa (8-0, 4-0 Big Ten) loaded at running back.

Iowa is so set that they can take their time with leading rusher Jordan Canzeri, who’s expected back soon following an ankle sprain. The run-first Hawkeyes should have at least three backs get multiple carries Saturday when it faces Indiana (4-4, 0-4).

Board permanently revokes license of a former Treynor Teacher/Coach

News, Sports

November 3rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

A former Treynor teacher and coach accused of sexual abuse will never teach again in Iowa. According to the Daily NonPareil, the Board of Educational Examiners issued a permanent revocation of 46-year old Michael Travis’ teaching license last month after Travis pleaded guilty Aug. 18th to simple assault, a misdemeanor, and agreed to surrender his license to the state.

Travis did not have to register as a sex offender and did not serve any jail time. He received a deferred judgement, and he continued to maintain his innocence in a statement. He had been a teacher at Treynor Elementary School and an assistant softball coach at Treynor High School at the time of his arrest in May 2014.

A prosecutor with the Pottawattamie County Attorney’s Office said the alleged victims – three former softball players and a fifth-grader, with alleged incidents from 2002 through 2006 – were involved in the plea deal and wanted to make sure Travis wouldn’t remain a teacher. The Board of Educational Examiners voted Oct. 9th to revoke his license as well as endorsements as a K-12 athletic coach, K-6 elementary classroom teacher and K-8 physical education teacher. He also held an expired substitute license.

The revocation carries no possibility of reinstatement.
