Yadier Molina undergoes 2nd thumb surgery, in cast 4-5 weeks

Sports

December 17th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina has undergone a second operation on his injured left thumb and will be in a cast for 4-5 weeks. The second surgery took place because Molina was still experiencing discomfort in the thumb. The first operation came in mid-October after the Cardinals were eliminated by the Chicago Cubs in the NL Division Series.

The team is hopeful the eight-time Gold Glove winner and seven-time All-Star can return by opening day. After the first procedure, they had anticipated he would be ready for spring training. The 33-year-old Molina returned for the playoffs after injuring the thumb while tagging out the Cubs’ Anthony Rizzo at the plate in Chicago on Sept. 20.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Jake White scored 17 points, on 7-of-10 shooting, and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Tre’Shawn Thurman had 10 points and a career-high 14 boards to help Nebraska-Omaha beat Simpson (Iowa) 81-71 Wednesday night.

Kyler Erickson scored a career-high 13 and Tim Smallwood had 10 points for Omaha (6-5). The Mavericks outrebounded Simpson 56-33, including 23-5 on the offensive glass. White scored the final six points in an 8-0 run to give Omaha a 35-20 lead with 8:16 left in the first half. Simpson’s Austin Turner hit a 3 just more than a minute later but the Storm went scoreless for five-plus minutes as the Mavericks pushed their lead to 27 with 1:55 left before halftime.

Omaha shot just 41 percent from the field and made 14 of 25 free throws. Simpson was 2 of 2 from the line. Ryan Skaar scored 18 — all on 3-pointers — to lead Simpson, a Division Three school.

Iowa State signs 5 junior college players

December 16th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State coach Matt Campbell has signed five junior college players to bolster the Cyclones in 2016. Iowa State announced Wednesday that Campbell has brought in two defensive backs, a pair of linemen and a tight end. All five will enroll for the spring semester.

Perhaps the most intriguing new Iowa State player is defensive back D’Andre Payne, a former four-star recruit who played at Tennessee as a freshman in 2014 before redshirting last year at a junior college.

The linemen are Oge Odeogu and Karson Green, the tight end is Clifford Fernandez and the other defensive back is Thadd Daniels.

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield is the unanimous pick as the Big 12 offensive player of the year and one of seven Sooners on The Associated Press All-Big 12 first team. The playoff-bound Sooners won their ninth Big 12 title under Bob Stoops, who on Wednesday became the first four-time winner of the AP Big 12 coach of the year award.

Oklahoma had four first-team selections on offense, including sophomore running back Samaje Perine a year after he was the league’s top offensive newcomer. Oklahoma State junior defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah, with 13 sacks, is the Big 12 defensive player of the year.

Iowa State freshman running back Mike Warren is newcomer of the year after running for 1,339 yards.

DALLAS (AP) — Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz has won the Eddie Robinson Award, given to the nation’s top coach in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Football Writers Association of America announced Wednesday that Ferentz was selected for the honor by its members. Ferentz is the first Iowa coach to win the award in its 59-year history.

Ferentz, the AP national coach of the year in 2002, took a team that went 7-6 in 2014 and led them to the first 12-0 regular season in school history. Iowa lost to Michigan State in the Big Ten championship game.

The Hawkeyes (12-1) close out their season by playing Stanford (11-2) in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1st.

Iowa State promotes Tom Manning to offensive coordinator

Sports

December 16th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State coach Matt Campbell has promoted line coach Tom Manning to offensive coordinator. Manning spent the past four seasons as an assistant under Campbell at Toledo. Manning then came with Campbell when he was hired by Iowa State last month.

Manning and Campbell were teammates for a season at Division III powerhouse Mount Union. Manning later coached at Mount Union for a season before joining Campbell at Toledo.

Manning’s promotion fills one of the last pieces on Campbell’s new staff. The first-year coach still has yet to hire a defensive coordinator. Iowa State went 3-9 last season under Paul Rhoads, who was fired in November after seven years in Ames.

ISU’s Mitrou-Long to miss the rest of the season

Sports

December 16th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State starting guard Naz Mitrou-Long is out for the rest of the season because of his ailing hips. The fifth-ranked Cyclones say Mitrou-Long will miss the remainder of his senior year because his surgically repaired hips haven’t responded the way he would like.

Mitrou-Long says he’ll seek a medical redshirt after playing eight games and averaging 12 points. Mitrou-Long missed Sunday’s win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, but apparently the rest didn’t help his discomfort.

Mitrou-Long’s absence will further deplete Iowa State’s thin rotation. Though the Cyclones (9-0) will finally have transfer Deonte Burton eligible for Saturday’s game against Northern Iowa, they’ll still be only seven players deep.
