Iowa holds off Drake 70-64

Sports

December 19th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Mike Gesell scored 17 points, including a crucial dunk with 30 seconds left, and Iowa held off Drake 70-64 on Saturday. The Hawkeyes (8-3) blocked a school-record 14 shots – including six from freshman Nicholas Baer – in beating the in-state rival Bulldogs for the 32nd time in their last 35 meetings.

Iowa went on a 13-2 run midway through the second half, but Ore Arogundade’s 3-pointer pulled Drake within 66-64 with 1:37 left. Jarrod Uthoff answered with a layup, and Gesell’s dunk sealed a win that was a lot closer than expected for the Hawkeyes.

Baer also scored 13 points with seven rebounds for Iowa. Reed Timmer had 25 points – including 16 straight down the stretch – to lead the Bulldogs (4-7), who have dropped four in a row.

An injury thrusts Burton into spotlight for Iowa St

Sports

December 18th, 2015 by admin

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State had hoped to ease Marquette transfer Deonte Burton into its rotation.

The loss of Naz Mitrou-Long for the season did away with that luxury.

Burton, a 6-foot-4 swing player, will be counted on as a key contributor for the fifth-ranked Cyclones (9-0) starting with Saturday’s game against Northern Iowa (6-3) in Des Moines.

Burton, a sophomore, averaged 6.9 points in 32 games at Marquette. He was named the Big 12 preseason newcomer of the year.

Cyclones pick up offensive line transfer

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State received a major boost on its offensive line with the addition of Rhode Island transfer Tyler Catalina, Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell announced today.

Catalina, who will graduate from Rhode Island in May, signed his financial aid agreement and will enroll in graduate school at Iowa State in the summer. Catalina will have one season of eligibility as a graduate transfer in 2016.

“First and foremost Tyler is a guy that is proven,” Campbell said. “To do what he’s done in his career at Rhode Island is exceptional. He understands what it’s like to play consistent at an elite level. He brings the understanding of what it takes to play at a high level into our program, and that is critical for us as we continue to move forward. I am proud and honored to have him join us.”

A native of Worcester, Mass., Catalina started at least 10 games in each of the last three seasons at Rhode Island, amassing a total of 33 career starts at both right tackle and left tackle.

The 6-6, 298-pounder was a two-time all-conference selection for the Rams, earning second-team All-CAA honors as a junior and third-team accolades as a sophomore. He was a preseason FCS All-America pick in 2015.

Catalina, who was voted a team captain by his teammates in 2015, prepped at Wachusett Regional High School, helping his team win a pair of state titles. He was an all-state selection by the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.
