Thousands of Iowa football fans will be heading to California next week and they can expect tight security at the Rose Bowl game and parade. Pasadena Police Chief Phillip Sanchez talked about the increased enforcement for the 127th Rose Parade at a news conference Tuesday. “We’ll have more than two dozen undercover officers who will be patrolling the parade route and more than two dozen bomb-dog teams,” Sanchez said. Dozens of security cameras will be in place as well, according to Sanchez. More than 700,000 people are expected to line the route of the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day morning. The Rose Bowl, featuring Iowa versus Stanford, will kickoff later that afternoon.
Homeland Security Special Agent Mark Selby said they’ll be deploying an “unprecedented volume of resources and technologies” for both the parade and game. “In the wake of the tragedy two weeks ago in San Bernadino, I really don’t think anybody needs to be reminded of the necessity and the vital importance of security,” Selby said. “But I think it’s important to realize these preparations started more than a year ago.”
U.S. Customs and Border Protection will patrol the game and parade from the sky. Fans attending the game will be provided with clear bags for their personal belongings as they enter the stadium. The University of Iowa received over 54,000 ticket requests from fans hoping to attend the game. The Iowa Hawkeyes last played in the Rose Bowl in 1991.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Abdel Nader hit a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left that put No. 11 Iowa State ahead, and No. 22 Cincinnati missed three shots in the closing seconds, allowing the Cyclones to hold on for an 81-79 victory on Tuesday night. The Cyclones (10-1) led by 13 points early in the second half before Troy Caupain led the Bearcats back. Kevin Johnson’s 15-foot jumper gave Cincinnati (10-3) its first lead with 4:22 left.
Nader’s 3-pointer from the right wing — he’d missed his first four shots from beyond the arc — put the Cyclones ahead once again. Caupain and Farad Cobb missed 3-pointers, and Gary Clark was short on a bank shot in the closing seconds.
Georges Niang led Iowa State with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Nader finished with 11 points, making his only 3-pointer the game winner. Caupain had 18 points for Cincinnati, which has lost both of its games against ranked teams. The Bearcats also fell to crosstown rival Xavier 65-55.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Peter Jok scored 21 points on a career-high five 3-pointers to lead Iowa to an 85-63 win over Tennessee Tech on Tuesday. Freshman Nicholas Baer added 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting off the bench and Mike Gesell had 10 assists for the Hawkeyes (9-3). Torrance Rowe scored 15 points and Hakeem Rogers had 13 points and six rebounds for Tennessee Tech (8-5).
The Hawkeyes fired up a season-high 30 3-pointers, connecting on 11. Iowa scored 13 unanswered points to ignite a 28-6 run midway through the first half to pull away from the Golden Eagles. The Hawkeyes had eight steals and forced 18 turnovers in its final nonconference tuneup before next week’s Big Ten opener against No. 1 Michigan State. Jarrod Uthoff had 13 points and Anthony Clemmons added 11.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Kale Abrahamson had 30 points for the second time in his career and Graham Woodward had a career-high 23 points to lead Drake to an 87-70 win over Abilene Christian on Tuesday night. Drake stopped a four-game losing skid and gave coach Ray Giacoletti his 200th career victory.
Abrahamson hit 5 of 9 from beyond the arc and was 9 of 14 from the floor. Woodward was 4 of 6 from long range as the Bulldogs hit 10 of 18 treys and made a scorching 30 of 48 (62.5 from the floor.
Reed Timmer added 10 points for Drake (5-7). The Bulldogs were up 43-32 at the break and were ahead 65-46 midway of the second half. Abilene Christian (4-8) closed to 74-64 with 4:19 left in the game but Timmer scored four straight and Abrahamson hit a three to push the lead to 81-64. Jaylen Franklin led ACU with 24 points.

HONOLULU (AP) — Aaron Valdes scored 15 points and Hawaii remained perfect, 8-0, on its home court by beating Northern Iowa, 68-52 in a first-round game of the Diamond Head Classic Tuesday night. Hawaii (8-1) advances to play No. 3 Oklahoma in the second of two semifinal games Wednesday.
Valdes hit a 3-pointer with 1:47 left in the first half to give the Rainbow Warriors a 32-25 lead and Isaac Fleming added two free throws to make 34-25 at intermission. Sai Tummala hit the second of two free throws to spark a 10-0 run that pushed Hawaii’s lead to 21 points, 68-47 after Stefan Jovanovic hit a layup off a feed from Fleming with 4:27 left.
Tummala added 12 points for Hawaii and Fleming added 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists and six steals. Jovanovic added 11 points, nine boards and four blocks. Jeremy Morgan had 13 points to lead Northern Iowa (7-4).
IOWA CITY, Iowa — Six Hawkeyes scored in double figures, there were 21 assists on 28 made field goals, and Iowa attempted 34 free throws.
It added up to an 89-76 victory for the No. 24 Hawkeyes over intrastate rival Drake inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The win is the 14th in a row for Iowa in the series that is now tied, 24-24.
Four of five UI starters scored in double figures: junior Ally Disterhoft (20 points), junior Alexa Kastanek (15), sophomore Chase Coley (11), and freshman Tania Davis (10). Freshman Megan Gustafson and sophomore Whitney Jennings scored 16 and 15 points off the bench.
The Hawkeyes complete the nonconference portion with a record of 10-2.
The Hawkeyes were balanced and proficient prior to the break. They led, 51-35, by shooting 55 percent from the field (18-of-33) and 100 percent from the line (9-of-9). Kastanek, with three 3-pointers, paced Iowa with 11 points, followed by Disterhoft (10), Coley (nine), Gustafson (eight), Davis (six), and Jennings (five).
The Hawkeyes grabbed their largest lead at 62-42 with 3:09 left in the third quarter. Drake (7-4) cut the margin to eight points twice late in the fourth quarter. During the final 10-minute span, Bulldog junior Lizzy Wendell scored 16 of her game-high 35 points.
Drake started the season with six straight wins, including an opening 74-70 victory against Iowa State and 89-70 at Wisconsin. The Bulldogs have dropped four of their last five.
The Hawkeyes open Big Ten Conference play Thursday, Dec. 31, at Nebraska (9-2). They return home Jan. 4 against C. Vivian Stringer-coached Rutgers (9-3). Iowa has won 24 consecutive games in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women’s basketball team (8-3 overall, 0-0 Big 12) took down Northern Arizona (4-7, 0-0 Big Sky), 79-63 at Hilton Coliseum on Tuesday. Sophomore Bryanna Fernstrom put up 23 points, 13 rebounds and a school record nine blocked shots in the Cyclone victory.
Fernstrom led the way in the early going, scoring nine points and grabbing three rebounds in the first quarter. Jadda Buckley and Seanna Johnson chipped in six each, and the Cyclones shot 50 percent from the field to take a 24-18 lead after one. The Lumberjacks made four of their eight three-point field goals in the opening stanza to stay within striking distance.
It was an up-and-down second quarter for the Cyclones, as NAU stayed hot from long distance. The Lumberjacks put together a 13-3 run early in the quarter to take a brief 31-30 lead when Passionate Amukamara hit a triple with 5:23 to play in the half. However, Johnson scored six of ISU’s final 11 points to regain a 41-40 lead at halftime.
Despite making just four field goals in the third period, the Cyclones boosted their lead to 57-54 behind six points each from Buckley and Fernstrom. The ISU defense was bolstered by five blocks from Fernstrom in the quarter, as NAU shot just 6-of-18 in the period.
Iowa State pushed its lead to double digits for the first time with a quick 7-0 run early in the fourth quarter. The flurry took just a minute of game time, as Fernstrom hit a pair of buckets inside, to go with a Nicole Blaskowsky three-pointer to put the Cyclones up 66-56 with 6:34 to play. ISU would hold on to win 79-63, as Buckley (17) and Johnson (16) joined Fernstrom in double-figures. Buckley also registered the first double-double of her career, chipping in a career-high 10 assists.
Iowa State will be back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 30 as they open Big 12 play at Kansas State at 7 p.m. CT. Television coverage for the game can be found on ESPN3.
ST. LOUIS (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals and free-agent pitcher Mike Leake have agreed to terms on a contract, a person with direct knowledge of the deal says. The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been formally announced, said the signing is pending the results of a physical.
General manager John Mozeliak has scheduled a Tuesday afternoon news conference at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals failed to land outfielder Jason Heyward and pitcher David Price earlier this off-season. Details of the contract with the 28-year-old were not immediately available.
Leake is 64-52 with a 3.88 ERA in 6 seasons. The right-hander was 11-10 with a 3.70 ERA for Cincinnati and San Francisco last season, totaling 30 starts and 190 innings.
