Coastal Carolina beats Arizona 5-4 to even CWS finals

Sports

June 29th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Connor Owings’ bloop RBI single sparked a three-run eighth inning, and Coastal Carolina beat Arizona 5-4 on Tuesday night to send the College World Series finals to a deciding Game 3. Mike Morrison was sensational in his first start of the season, helping the Chanticleers rebound from a 3-0 loss to the Wildcats in the opener. The teams meet again Wednesday night to decide the national championship.

Owings was batting .125 (3 for 24) in the CWS when he stepped to the plate against Cameron Ming in the eighth. The Big South player of the year fought off a high inside pitch, sending it into short left field to drive in Anthony Marks from second base with the go-ahead run.

Franklin misses spot in 100 back, won’t defend title in Rio

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Another star from the London Olympics has flopped at the U.S. swimming trials. This time, it was Missy Franklin missing out on a chance to defend her title in the 100-meter backstroke. The 21-year-old Franklin finished seventh in the final Tuesday night, more than a second behind winner Olivia Smoliga.

It was a stunning fall for the swimmer who captured four golds and a bronze in 2012, though not totally surprising given her recent performances. Franklin has struggled since turning pro last summer and barely qualified for the final, forcing her to swim in the undesirable first lane.

Ryan Lochte, another of America’s greatest swimmers, missed out in his first two individual events as well. Slowed by a groin injury, he finished fourth in the 200 freestyle.

Arizona’s Cloney shuts down Chanticleers in 3-0 Game 1 win

Sports

June 28th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — JC Cloney pitched a four-hitter and Ryan Aguilar drove in a pair of runs, leading Arizona to a 3-0 victory over Coastal Carolina in Game 1 of the College World Series finals on Monday night. The Wildcats (49-22) can wrap up their second national championship in five years with a win today (Tuesday).

Cloney extended his scoreless innings streak at the CWS to 16. The junior left-hander pitched seven innings in the Wildcats’ 3-0 win over UC Santa Barbara last Wednesday. Cloney (8-4) allowed four singles, walked three and struck out six in the second complete game of his career.

Danny Duffy pitches Royals to 6-2 win over Cardinals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Danny Duffy matched a career best with eight sharp innings, the Royals kept swinging hot bats and Kansas City routed the St. Louis Cardinals 6-2 on Monday night to open a four-game, two-city series.

Kendrys Morales went 4 for 4 and drove in two runs, and Eric Hosmer also had a pair of RBIs as the Royals roughed up Adam Wainwright (6-5) to snap a four-game losing streak to their cross-state rival.

Duffy (3-1) served up a two-run homer to Matt Holliday in the first before settling into a nice rhythm, keeping the Cardinals off balance with pinpoint control. The left-hander struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter while breezing through a lineup that scored 11 runs the previous day against Seattle.

The teams are in action this evening at 7:15, with the pre-game show at 6:20, on KJAN.

Cubs call up Peralta to help struggling bullpen

Sports

June 27th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have promoted right-hander Joel Peralta from the minors to help their bullpen for the start of a series at the Cincinnati Reds. The Cubs signed the 40-year-old reliever this month after he was released by Seattle, where he was 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA. Chicago’s bullpen struggled during a 1-6 slump last week. Manager Joe Maddon said Monday that Peralta will be a boost in the clubhouse as well, comparing it to having another coach to help the younger players.

Right-handed reliever Gerardo Concepcion was optioned to Triple-A Iowa. He gave up a run during a 6-1 loss to the Marlins on Sunday. The bullpen has been hit hard in Chicago’s last four losses.

Iowa prep baseball coach suspended after OWI incident

News, Sports

June 27th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

DUNLAP, Iowa (AP) – A western Iowa baseball coach has been suspended following an allegation that he was drunk at a game. Coon Rapids Police Chief Joel Roetman told The Des Moines Register that the incident occurred during a Boyer Valley game in Coon Rapids on Friday night. Roetman says he performed a field sobriety test on Boyer Valley coach Jay Petersen and says Petersen’s blood alcohol content later tested out at more than twice the legal limit if he were driving.

Boyer Valley athletic director Daniel Steele said Saturday that Petersen is on suspension.
